Husband and I went to the casino last night. As we were waiting in the I.D. check line, something was holding up the group of young guys in front of us. Seemed the security guard was having to repeatedly explain something to the man whose I.D. she was currently checking. I heard, "This I.D. is 4 years expired, we can't accept it." And of course, being a moron, he didn't understand WHY it wasn't valid. Eventually she asked him to step out of the line so she could call a supervisor to speak to him, and let everyone else go ahead.

I mean, come on. You let your license expired...why would you think it's valid? How do you even drive? If you get pulled over, the cop isn't going to accept it either, and might very well arrest you!

I'm always very patient when going to a casino (even though I don't go very often.) I have a ton of family members in the business, including my mother and stepfather who I live with. If a casino lets an underaged person in then they can be fined a quarter of a million dollars in this state.

I don't work at a casino, but if some young upstart tried to question me about it I'd be apt to laugh and ask if they'd like to leave a retainer to cover the fee before entering. That would probably scare them off.

Right now my license is expired but my photo ID isn't, because technically they're two different things even though they're issued at the same place (and under a single service fee). The license is yearly and the ID is 4 or 6 years. Hasn't caused me any trouble so far.

Yearly?! Dude, it's already a 3 hour wait at the Driver's License Division around here. Our licenses are good for years at time (depends on your age group how long they last), I can't imagine what it'd be like if people had to renew yearly.

Our Photo I.D. and our license are two different things, though they go in the same plastic folder and to the police, you can't have one without the other. The 'license' part is a paper card saying that we're a valid driver with such and such classifications. It's good for a year, you renew it at the end of your birthday month. The photo card is good for about 5 years or so, just to keep up with how you change as you age. I got my I.D. when I was 15, and I definitely do NOT look the same 5 years later!! People have actually challenged it and ask me to provide my health card / SIN card as well.

that reminds me... I need to renew my license next year... I'm already dreading dealing with the DLD even though that's 15 months from now

Oh, and the true evil... they have the license expire on your birthday... so really it's like happy birthday, and our present to you is hours of tedious waiting and bullshit at the DLD

i would look for a local dealership that can do a liscence renewal. we have a GM here with a small office in the back where they will process the paperwork and give you your temp liscence. there is usually never a wait. ( i also get my plates done there)

Chuckles, "Four years expired, yeah, that'll get you sitting on the curb waiting for a ride. If its a little expired, they'll usually cut you some slack, but that's way past the limit. As to the DMV, i'd forgotten the pain of that, in NJ it could take upwards of a half hour to get forms, and another half to turn them in, and then the wait began. Here in AZ your license (just D, J & M licenses) are good until you're 67, the others are four year licenses. I really wouldn't be overly bothered if the license period was only a year though, wait times here in Phoenix are usually 30 to 40 minutes, and i don't think i've ever waited over an hour for basic services even on a busy day. I think the rest of the country could learn a thing or two from the AZ MVD."

That reminds me of a Spider Robinson story where some old coot has outlived everybody... digs out his birth certificate on his birthday... and finds that it also has an expiration date: TODAY!

Utah lets us renew DLs up to six months prior... and every other time it can be done online.

I renewed my DL in Virginia last year. The month before they had extended the renewal period from 5 years to 8 years. For the previous DL, I was able to renew by mail and they reused the photo they took 5 years earlier, thus using the same photo for ten years. Fortunately my looks didn't change much.
