I think this counts as a sighting...it's currently 6:11am and starting at 5:37am, someone's car alarm (we think) went off and has not shut off. It doesn't sound like a standard car alarm, it's a constant, LOUD ringing. Much louder when we open the door or window, so we know at least it's coming from outside. I suggested we call the police, but husband has the only working phone at the moment since my charger is kaput, and he doesn't seem to want to bother them.

Edit: Oh hey, score! 4 minutes after posting this, the noise stopped! Maybe CS has some magic car alarm...magic!

Reminds me of a woman we had to complain about at my old complex. Every morning at about 5am as she drove away she'd HONK GOODBYE to her daughter!!! When the driveway was 5-feet from the condo windows. That stopped FAST!

Just this Sunday (or was it Saturday? Can't recall now). Someone in an apartment near me left their alarm on and on and on. I couldn't hear it in the rest of my apartment EXCEPT for in my bed, right by the window, when I was trying to sleep in. *sigh*

I think there's a rule somewhere which says that burglar alarms must turn themselves off after a period of time - maybe half an hour.

Most alarm clocks also turn themselves off after an hour if not cancelled - annoyingly, I have one which turns off after two minutes, and which therefore sometimes fails to wake me up.

Oh, and your husband is sucky for refusing to call the police. If it had been a real burglary, the police would have wanted to know ASAP to give them a chance of catching the perps red-handed. That's what burglar alarms are for.

I thought about that too after the fact, but I think we were both too groggy and annoyed to be thinking straight. This same car alarm has woken us up more than once in the past at odd hours, although it's never stayed on as long as it did this morning.

My cell phone is my alarm clock, and it progressively gets louder if I ignore it.

I've noticed especially since I started Chantix, I WILL NOT get up or answer it right away and just leave it...tonight I left it for almost 15 minutes!

I'm sure my neighbor can hear that and isn't pleased....but I don't really care. Just another month and he'll be waking me up every Sunday while he screams at his TV every time the Packers screw up.

Yep, car alarms suck. Some are so sensitive...that they're constantly going off. Someone walks past the vehicle, it goes off. A pigeon shits on it, it goes off, etc. Annoying as hell, and probably why nobody pays attention when they go off.

Living in New York City like I did for a year and a half, you had to deal with all sorts of horrors associated with car alarms and sirens. It never failed at 3 AM when the firetrucks went roaring by because someone tried to hotbox their closet in the building where their marijuana grow was that the roaring FDNY trucks (which have 130 dB sirens...as loud as jet engines), would set off car alarms. Which would then proceed to go off for 90 minutes uninterrupted. And to make it even better, the trucks would come roaring back to the station with the sirens on around 530 AM...AND SET THE GODDAMN ALARM OFF AGAIN!

You learned to sleep with ear plugs or block out any sounds, both of which could be hazardous if your flaming wooden and steel death trap full of asbestos and rodents happened to catch on fire.

Depends though. Where I live, the cops won't do anything about car alarms. Now, they can't even get into cars if you've locked the keys in--too many threats of lawsuits over "broken" or "damaged" cars.

How do I know this? Well, not long after I started working, our next-door neighbor went fishing with some buddies. One of the buddies left his car, a somewhat-older Nissan in the driveway. Locked it up tight, and took the keys--this is important. Nothing really went on until that night.

That goddamn car alarm went off about twice an hour, all night long Not only that, but it was one of those types that would blast the horns and flash the lights too. Trust me, it was annoying as hell, especially since it was very dark that night--it's hard to sleep when you're suddenly bathed in flashing light.

Neighbor's wife couldn't get into the car...because the tool had taken the keys. So, she called the cops. They came, and said that they couldn't do anything. Even Triple-A wouldn't come, since they too no longer open cars up. Only option was to deal with it. Needless to say, after several hours of that shit...quite a few people weren't happy. But, they relented when they saw that it wasn't her car--if it had been the goofballs on the other side, heads would have rolled!

That was pretty minor considering what the neighbor would have done to it. She was all for hotwiring that heap and dumping it in one of the more "interesting" areas of town. And no, the car wouldn't have survived--I'm sure it would have been heavily vandalized and possibly torched!

What pissed off everyone, is that the car's owner... *knew* it did that, and decided not to tell anyone. The guy actually bitched about what had been done to the car, and couldn't understand why people were upset. Uh, let me get this straight--people have to work the next day, you kept them up all night because of your POS car? Needless to say, he was no longer welcome over there after that. Gee, can't imagine why

I hate the ones that honk the horn. The beep is annoying but usually it's just a quick chirp. The honk always makes me jump. (Cuz, you know, honking the horn is meant to get someone's attention.) There's no reason to make a noise, except to advertize that you have an alarm. My car alarm sets when you lock the doors with the remote; you can hear the click of the doors locking, if you're within ten feet or so, and the lights flash (once when locking, twice when unlocking...or is it the other way around?) That's it. In the 7 years I've had the car the alarm has gone off maybe 5 times. Twice when I first got it because we wanted to see what it sounded like, so we set it off on purpose (for like 5 seconds, in the middle of the afternoon). Once my then-bf accidentally set it off by unlocking the door with the key instead of the remote. And twice recently I have set it off accidentally; both times I was opening the trunk (with the key, which should not set off the alarm) and was resting my laundry basket on the bumper while I opened it, and the alarm went off.

My old neighbors' son had an alarm that was always going off for no reason. He also liked to play the stereo loud, and was partial to pounding bass lines that rattle the windows across the street. () I always wanted to tell him if he quit advertising his awesome, awesome stereo () maybe he wouldn't need an alarm.

And to make it even better, the trucks would come roaring back to the station with the sirens on around 530 AM...AND SET THE GODDAMN ALARM OFF AGAIN!

They turn on the sirens just returning to the station? I live not far from the fire station (and the first aid station) and I've never heard a siren heading towards them, only away. Unfortunately my apartment faces a semi-majorish highway, right near where it meets up with another, bigger highway, which is a commuter route to NYC. Took me weeks to get used the traffic noise and be able to sleep for more than a few hours at a time when we first moved in.
