  • Wait a minute you don't have what?

So today was my son's first day of preschool. Since he was apparently well adjusted enough not to freak out the minute Mama vanished I bit the mental bullet and resigned myself to going and upgrading his wardrobe. The blasted kid eats like a pig but does nothing but goes up.

Now in the spring, it was sadly announced that the town's Target was going to be closing down while they built up a big shiny super one for us all. When I heard this I proceeded to go hog wild on clothes for my son for the summer making sure to get them 1 size bigger so he'd fit into them.

Unfortunately, the weather has been colder and he's starting to just get to big for any of his older warmer clothes. The boy needed pants his size NOW and not in 2 weeks when our store finally reopened.

This left me 2 options. Pay more at the department stores in the area that may or may not have his size (since apparently every kid in a 10 mile radius is the same size) or...go to the evil bad place of hate, doom, and death!

I figured it's 9 am, during the week. Wal-hell won't full of devils yet and I'll be able to get a few other things while there, like maternity clothes.

Now mind you I avoid Wal-hell like the plague, but normally my shopping hours are later in the day when the evil spawn is descending.

Sure enough, the parking lot is pretty much empty. People are either at work or sleeping off last night's binge. Only have a few fellow mom's with really small kids and grannies roaming about.

I find clothes for the small fry, a few things for my hubby, get confused cause the place got remodeled, and mildly annoyed cause apparently they don't do plastic dishes. My son recently learned to put his dishes in the sink but has the issue of doing this with Mama and Daddy's plates to...which break.

Oh well no big deal, the dishes were more cause I was there. Instead I'll just wait for Target to open again and get them there where I can get ones that aren't trying and failing to pass themselves off as glass.

So then I turn to my other matter. I'm pregnant and my pants are starting to not fit. Most of my sweats are getting really worn out since I wear them so much and I'm needing some nice clothes.

So I start combing the area with a giant sign marked Women. I'm seeing nothing and it occurs to me that most would have a smaller sign at least marking where maternity is. I start looking and find nothing.

Now I'm confused and go find a worker (surprisingly they do exist). She blinked a minute and then looked herself before looking confused like me and saying we'll go ask the actual department folks (she apparently worked the Home department and I caught her coming back from break).

Find the lady sitting by the fitting rooms looking bored and point blank ask where maternity would be.

    "Oh we don't have maternity."

My brain does a little explosion in my head at this. Even the department stores have a maternity section and Target ALWAYS had one right back by the fitting rooms in the old one. Perhaps I heard incorrectly and it's just being moved?

    "Nope, no maternity anymore."

I pretty much paid for my stuff and left the store in shock. In a town like this were the next civilization is at least a 30 minutes drive (in good traffic) away and you have only 1 real competitor you have NO maternity section? Really? I thought your company promoted people having small armies of minions to help support your store as customers and as workers cause they need the cash?

My brain is still boggling at this. God I want my Target back.

    I guess Wal-Hell doesn't believe in procreation.

My company did away with its maternity section in all its stores except a few. My store happens to be one still carrying maternity clothes.

It's just what happens in big box retail. If it doesn't sell enough, get rid of it and replace it with something that will.

The maternity sections in all five of the department stores at the mall I work at are fairly small at best. (two are upscale, the other three are more suburban) There are shops for pregnant women and thankfully some kids clothing stores also provide maternity. (back when I worked for one of said department stores, I'd get women asking me where they could get some maternity stuff.()

Except for a store that specializes in maternity...none of them around here in the ten mile range have clothes over a size 14...sometimes 16.
