  • Sinking

My father and I went for a sail today. It was quite nice: good wind, reasonable waves, the whole bit.

While we were sailing out, we waved to a motorboat full of rather large people held to the pier by a committee of more people supervising the safe holding of a line by a young girl. As they didn't wave back, we figured they either had something against sailboats or were busy working out how to fit twelve people in a six-person boat. No biggie; we didn't think much of it and went on our way.

When we returned a few hours later, we saw a boat sitting pierside. We waved and said how nice the lake was, and how nice a time they'd have and other general pleasantries. The people in the boat didn't seem thrilled. Turns out it was the same boat.

    Why?

They put too many people in the boat and it started taking on water through a valve in the head (contrary to the rules they'd signed). Oops #1.
They then called the company from whom they rented the boat, but didn't think to get back on the pier to keep from sinking when the boat started to take on water from, of all places, the valve in the hull connected to the small head. Oops #2.
When the owner got there, instead of requesting another boat on another day, or perhaps their fee and deposit back before leaving, they got food and watched the rest of us get the half-submerged boat out of the water. Oops #3.

    What's that spell?

Does it give us a H.U.D?

Lake Conroe, perchance? I'm surprised it still exists in the current drought.

I'm willing to bet that there was ONE person in the group that had a lick of sense. I say that because I was always that person. I practically grew up on Lake Travis near Austin, sailing everything from 14 foot boardboats to 30 foot keelboats (small compared to ocean standards). The ex-husband's parents bought a small powerboat and set their 4 sons loose with no training. They figured that I would/could teach them all they needed to know. As if they would listen. I finally started refusing to go out with them.

      /end threadjack (sorry)
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

        Clear lake, actually.

Perhaps the one with common sense was the girl holding the line.

Sounds like those people's heads had a lot in common with a boat's heads - in unflushed condition (i.e. full of "specialized high intensity training"), of course.
