  • theater was blacklisted

This is kind of a sequel to my last thread about my theater experience seeing toy story 1 and 2 and I wanted to know if my friend was an SC or not. personally I think its a bit half and half...

Anyway, saturday we all wanted to see "where the wild things are", but didn't want to go too far out because we all needed to be back relativly early. so we decide to go to the theater that we went to last time. I was not happy about it, but sucked it up. when we got there though, they were sold out... oh well, its a rainy saturday so we should have called ahead. so we decide to go a bit later and order the tickets online.

This theater doesn't work with fandango, they have their very own system they control because they have assigned seating (which is awesome). me and my GF order our tickets no problem, but my friend and his GF have problems. he gets paid via a card (thanks best buy...) but it works like a credit card. it declined over and over, but when he checked his balance money was taken out... wait... what?

Ok... so the system messed up, but luckily it only did it once, so he figured "I'll call, get the tickets since they will see I paid, and all is well"... wrong. he calls and after being transfered and put on hold 3 times he finally gets the manager. she is rude right off the bat, thinking he is trying to scam them. he assures them he has paid and they check their system. they see they are 27 bucks over (which is the price of 2 tickets)... ok... they see they have his money, now its a simple matter of comping the tickets and everyone breaks even. no muss no foul. but she says no. she gives no reason why or why not, just refuses to give him the tickets he paid for.

He has worked in several theaters in california (we are now in philly, but they all work the same) and he knows that if there is even a bit of discomfort, tickets are comped. he explains he isn't asking for free tickets, he already paid, he just wants the tickets he paid for and knows they can do it since he has done it many times before in many theaters that work the exact same way (assign seating and their own online ticket sales). she still refused. he was enraged now (this is where he was kind of an SC blowing up, but considering he lost money in this it's understandable.

Finally he gets fed up, says he wants his money back. she says ok and says it will take 3 days to come back... so now he doesn't have enough for tickets to somewhere else tonight. more frustration. so me and my GF get our refund aswell and we all swear to never go to that theater again. the theater (the building) is nice, good seating and a nice system of assigned seating... but all the employees and managers are idiots, are always understaffed, and never check in the theater to make sure its even running properly. never again... they lost our business forever... but since they are in the middle of university city, I doubt the 4 of us will make any difference to them.

Report them to the BBB for sure. Technically, it's fraud since he paid for a service he did not receive. What a bitch manager!

I second the reporting notion. He paid, didn't get the tickets and was flat out refused them even though she was able to show that they did indeed have his money.

        I second that

I too, believe that is fraud. Your friend paid for tickets and should be given the tickets. I think the only thing that would prevent it from being fraud is if they have a disclaimer on their website that says "Any error on the computer's end will result in a refund that will be issued in three business days." Unless there is a disclaimer I believe it is fraud.

It would be like me getting a sweater, paying for the sweater, but before I leave have the manager take the sweater back and telling me that they will issue a refund for the sweater in three days.

Is this a chain? Write to corporate or find out who the owners are and write to them. They don't like to hear about lowly little managers screwing over their customer base.

Guys, the BBB isn't an enforcement agency. The most they can do is give them a bad rating, and that's only if the business is accredited. If it's the theater I suspect it is, it doesn't have a rating.

The BBB can't really do anything, but don't let that stop you from reporting your experience.

Since they did the refund without hassle, you can't go after them for fraud. Since the automated system borked the order, they aren't really beholden to giving your friend the tickets, even if a brain-damaged monkey would have known better.

Methinks this is the sort of thing you'd take to PFB or the like. Maybe hit up some local college-kids-trafficed sites where you can post your woes with their (lack of) customer service.

That may be true, but businesses don't like having complaints registered with the BBB. It's still worth a shot.

A couple answers to what the theater is like. it isn't a chain, it may have a couple theaters under its belt, but it's not like AMC or lowes. it is the only theater for 20 or more blocks that is even worth going to. the other two are ritz theaters so they don't get mainstream movies. complaining to anyone about this theater won't do anything because it is the only one in university city. there are over 3 colleges surrounding it, and the next closest mainstream theater is about 8 miles away.

the only thing that will make the place better is a management change. one of them has to either get fired or quit. the staff is terrible, and will only change when management does. if they don't care about customers in the slightest, then there is a problem.

Hrm... I wonder if it might be worth your time to invite one of the big chains to come to your area. There's obviously a hole that it would be in someone's interests to fill, there.

if I had the money I would open my own theater, 13 and up only, kids allowed during the day time hours (I know a few theaters that do this) and only when with a parent. I would serve specialty drinks of special nights and have awesome grindhouse nights. this would probably be HUGE in university city, but I know for a fact it is VERY expensive to have a business there. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to level several buildings and build a whole new facility. some companies may not see it as worth it... I dunno. frankly, if they haven't considered it, I would be surprised. there must be a reason no major theater chain tried to move in.

Did you go to The Bridge? If you did, it's just another sign of how far that place has fallen. It used to be the coolest, most awesome theater in philadelphia (well, besides the Ritz, but those theaters show independent flicks) when it first opened. It's slowly gone down hill from there.

So this theater is in the middle of university city? Surrounded by three colleges? Lots of student business? Write up your experiences for the student newspapers. Give the student reporters a juicy local story that negatively affects students to report on. The power of the press used to be a force to respect. Maybe it still is.
