  • Wondering if I should do more than just rant to the forum about this sighting.

I had a hotel guest who was not proficiant with the English Language. Lucky for her I'm fluent in Spanish as my second language, so she asked me to order her a pizza. I get her toppings (same as my favorite! Woot!) and size. I proceed to call Pizza the Hutt.

Their greeting: "Pizza Hut we're closed!"

It's hard to convey the tone of voice. It's not yelling at me, but definitely deserves a "!" punctuation.

        That's why you call Domino's.

Though I know what you mean. One local Pizza Hut is notorious for stopping delivery for no apparent reason. 7pm on a Friday night? "We're not doing anymore delivery tonight!" Yeah, the same "!" at the end of the sentence. It's always more of a declaration. Yet I know they delivery. Guess they just never have any drivers available.

Then could they not offer an option for the customer to pick up the pizza?

Well, I understand answering the phone even if they're closed. We've even had threads on here about it, customers complaining a place answering the phone even if they're not open yet, or if they're already closed. And yet they have to answer in case it's a manager, or someone with information for an employee, or any of a lot of situations.

The thing with this one though, I'm seeing, is the tone of voice, which I suppose was not appropriate.

Aye. We often had *somebody* calling after hours who was part of the company in some way, so we needed to be ready to answer.

At DaddyJim's, if somebody called a little after-hours, we'd usually do the PhoneSmile and say "Thank you for calling Daddy Jim's <streetname>, I'm sorry but we're closed" -- naturally, the normal response to this was "Large pizza with everything" >_<

About 45 minutes AFTER our posted closing time, tho, this would often devolve into "DaddyJim's <streetname>". Even then, we still attempted to be nice about it.

Thing is, if we even considered claiming we were closed before we really were, our heads would have been on pikes. That's a HUUUUUGE no-no. PizzaHut could probably get away with that in our market, as they are -- at best -- in third place. DJ's and Dom's? Not so much.

As someone who works at a pizza hut, Thats out "closed" greeting although shortened from the "Thank you for call Pizza Hut of xxxxxxxx Sorry we're closed." We always answer the phone closed or open.

Maybe they were in a hurry to get things done??? And Domino's isn't a bad idea.

This is exactly what I'm ranting about. It's not so much the fact they answered the phone that bothered me, but the tone of voice they answered with.

Yep, tone is everything. Frankly, if they were giving you attitude enough to bother you, I would call, or write a letter. It's not like you were engaged in an extended conversation, so it's very unreasonable for them to be that aggravating that quickly.

Ya I'm not a fan either. Too expensive for what they offer. Only reason I called was because I was acting as a mouthpiece for a Spanish-speaking guest. I usually go with a local pizza chain. I've never seen them outside of Colorado.

This is the letter I'm submitting.
I work at one of the hotels in the area and a Spanish-speaking guest, who had trouble with the English language asked me to place an order for her since I'm fluent in both. I must have called the store just after close since the employees were there to answer the phone. I understand that it would close early on Thanksgiving, and that's not the dissatisfaction I faced. The phone greeting I recieved was "Pizza Hut. We're closed." in what I could describe as a rushed tone of voice. It made me feel as if the employee was in a hurry to have me off the phone.

I hope I got my point accross without being too harsh and I hope I was specific in what the issue was.

I tend to go with local places, too -- I actually like Pizza Hut, I put it slightly behind PJ's in terms of taste (but still way, way beyond Dom's). The best pizzas I've ever had here are at the sort of place where you normally get awesome food here -- those which have only had one location, ever. Tower of Pizza is quickly becoming one of my faves ^_^ (I'm sure there are other, unrelated pizza joints in the nation that have the same name tho)

I'm with y'all on the local places. Unfortunately, one of my favorites, the Upper Crust doesn't deliver outside of Santa Fe. My other favorite, Il Vicino doesn't deliver, but now that they've opened one across the street from me....

But my absolute favorite, Lorenzo's, I don't get very often. Only when I go down to Las Cruces.
