My father is currently the documentation manager at [software company].
A few hours ago he woke me up to tell me he needed to go in to work, and my car was the only one available, so he needed to know if I was working today. I am, so I need my car. He'd considered just taking my car, but thought better of it (and it's a good thing, too, because I just might have some contraband in there I don't want him to know about.....
). Instead, he wanted me to drive him to the high school so he could steal his own car from my kid brother, then have me drive my brother home.
In the end it became moot, because my brother came home a few minutes later.
So...why the hell does my father need to go into his M-F job on a Saturday?
Well, they just completed a major product for a client in France. The manual was sent off to the printers weeks ago, since it requires time to be manufactured, but the finishing touches to the software aren't finished until later. This is standard practice. Any noteworthy changes to the software that are made after the manual is finished are documented in the release notes, and are worked into the manual for any subsequent releases of the software.
The release notes were finished TWO WEEKS ago, and at that time my father submitted them to HIS boss (who is also the project manager for this project).
His boss said NOTHING about the release notes until THIS MORNING. He sent my father an email with a whole bunch of changes he wanted made, along with a number of things he wanted re-checked.
Oh, and right after sending this email, said manager boarded a plane for Paris, where he will be presenting the finished product to the client on MONDAY.
Talk about last minute!!
And because the guy hadn't made so much as a peep about the release notes for TWO WEEKS, my father assumed they were fine, so he decided to leave his work laptop at the office. If he'd brought the laptop home, he could have used it to log in to the VPN and get the work done from home. But of course, assume just makes an ass of u and me, so now he's stuck having to go into the office on a Saturday to get all these last minute changes done so the release notes will be ready for the client on Monday.
To say he's not a happy camper would be a vast understatement. Hopefully I'll already have left for work by the time he gets home.....
