My boyfriend's family owns a banquet hall. They had an business party there this past weekend. They used to provide in-house catering, but the caterer retired so now they have the kitchen and the clients hire their own caterers for the parties and they are allowed to use the kitchen and utensils. His family had had issues with caterers running-off with their pans, putting things back dirty, etc. But this caterer took the cake.
The party was set-up for about 80, but only about 30 showed. Regardless, the clients had already paid for all the food, decorations, etc. So there was A LOT of extra food.
Not only was the caterer trying to boss my boyfriend and his siblings around like the hired help (All in their 20s and 30's, not knowing they are the owners), he tries to get them to help him with the catering. Since they are busy with the other party business, he says he's going to call some family members for help with cleaning-up.
A half-hour later a HERD of teenagers crashes into the kitchen. Instead of starting with clean-up, they head into the party; which is still in full-swing. They raid the buffet, run around the party with the paying guests, hog the chocolate fountain, make idiots of themselves on the dancefloor, have the gall to try to boss my boyfriend's family around (like father like kids I guess), and then LEAVE with armfulls of food without picking-up a single pan or washing a single dish.
The party ended early and the caterer ended-up splitting with all the remaining food and left the clean-up to my boyfriend's family. As far as I know the clients did pay in-full but were not happy about the caterer. Whenever complaints like this crop-up the clients have to be reminded that the business did not supply the caterer; the clients hired them themselves. That way they'll complain to the caterer's company, and not the banquet hall.
Out of 40-portions of food uneaten, the boyfriend's family was left with...2-bags of dinner rolls. The really nice caterers fix them-up doggie bags in exchange for clean-up help.
