The test was to explain what the long term environmental effects would be if the chemical got out into the water system.
Oi, that would be brutal. It's a good thing the required temp for ice to sink is something around -60C (or something like that). Means it doesn't happen often in reality.

LOL! Yeah, "no more ice skating" (which was the complete answer of one of my classmates) would only be the beginning.

Reminds me of a science test I got one year. It told a story about the invention of a chemical that would make ice sink (the specific use was so that you wouldn't be bothered by ice bumping your teeth when you drink). The test was to explain what the long term environmental effects would be if the chemical got out into the water system.

Was this a remake? It sounds very much like the plot of the Japanese film Nankyoku Monogatari, a.k.a. Antarctica.

I've never seen that, but I've heard the soundtrack by Vangelis. Wonderful music; the track "Antarctica Echoes" is the best musical depiction of ice that I've ever heard. Don't listen to it without a sweater on.
Thank you for linking this! It's gorgeous!

I shall have to mention that to my scientist husband, then. There's a good chance he doesn't know that. Though the ice in question wasn't dropping into the water, as it was already in the water as part of the ice field the base was built in. But that other info may have played into it. Of course, this is assuming that it was actually portrayed accurately.
