You were much nicer than I would have been had it been my mail carrier. While I can understand the importance of keeping the sidewalks and steps clean for safety reasons, it sounds like there were legitimate reasons why it was the way it was. The way he chose to handle it would have totally pissed me off. I certainly wouldn't tolerate someone banging on my door and berating me in my own home.
Also, my wife is 30 weeks pregnant, and I would have been especially angry if she would have answered the door, and he talked to her like that. Needless to say, I would have been complaining to someone about it.
On another note, I can understand postal carriers being cautious about dogs. My dog goes spastic every time he sees a shadow at the door or hears a car door. He's a very nervous, high-strung dog.
