  • If You're Off Work Because of Snow.....

Why would you expect that everyone else will be at work?

Overheard this one at a grocery store this weekend when we had snow blow through here. Paraphrasing due to the participants extremely poor language skills:

Sucky Lady (SL): I called my boss and told him I wasn't coming in because the streets were just too bad to drive on.
Sucky Friend (SF): I was lucky, my boss called and told me I wasn't coming in.
SL: Yeah, well, after I called him, I thought I'd go see that new movie I was telling you about.
    SF: Yeah? How was it?
SL: Don't know, the damn theater was closed! They got a lot of balls being closed like that. How am I gonna see the movie now?
SF: Yeah, if you could get to the theater, the people running should have, too!

My brain is still hurting over that one. It's too dangerous for you to drive to work, but not for you to drive to the theater or to insist that the workers be there to entertain you?
Sorry, my cow died so I don't need your bull

Of all the places to expect to be open during a snow storm, they complain about a movie theatre?

The only way I could even think to justify them missing work is that their job is 50 miles away, but even that's a stretch. And how do they know those workers don't live far away. The stupid is strong with this one.

I can wrap my head around that. What I can't is how they get off complaining about being caught by their bosses, as though it's "unfair" that they get in trouble for playing hookey from work.

Yep, hope that movie was worth getting into a car accident.

Avatar is almost worth it though...Almost...

Myself and my siblings braved the middle of the Eastern Blizzard to go see Avatar. I had been waiting to see it for months and damned if I was going to let some snow stop me lol. I used to live up in New Hampshire though so I'm used to making my way around in a car with tons of snow out on the roads.

On a completely unrealated note, the movie was awesome and plan to see it again this Saturday

The funny thing is that, in almost 12 years of movie theatre experience, we have only closed early twice. Both times for state-declared snow emergencies. In New England.

I love movies, but not enough to risk death.

I Plaidman can walk a mile/half to get to work in a foot of snow, poor woman can get to work.

I would have laughed if she got caught by boss.

Bonus points if workplace was along way to movie theatre.

try being in the food delivery business. road are mostly impassable, the visibility sucks because of white out conditions, the hurricane force winds are whipping the dry powery snow into 5 foot drifts, city is pulling it own buses off the road cause half of them got stuck, schools are shut down all over the area, mail delivery is even being canceled AND the police are telling people to stay off the roads until the plows can get some of the main roads semi-cleared,

                  BUT

you say "Yeah I got plenty of food in the house but I want something DIFFERENT. Ya know its snowing and cold out ----- I know I WANT fresh and hot PIZZA" so you dash off to your computer and snap off a small order to your local national pizza chain. Hmmmmm the confirmation e-mail tells you delivery time will be 90 MINUTES
OMGWTF??? Why is the delivery time SOOOOOO high. it should not be any trouble for them to get your order to you in 30 minutes or less. the roads are NOT THAT BAD (even after listening to the local TV station yelling winter warnings for the last 2 hours)

but you want YOUR PIZZA so you sit around and wait. Finally you hear the doorbell. YAAAAA its the delivery guy with your pizza. you open the door to find a snowman standing on your porch with a bag. "Whast took you soooooooo long?????" you say as the snowman reads off your order and gives you the total.

you pay him EXACT change with a look of distain on your face esp for HIM making you wait and wait and wait. after all THIS IS HIS JOB, why should you have to pay extra for some so simple as a small cheese pizza. after the snowman hands you the pizza box, you tell him (with extra added fake sweetness and joy) "Have a good night and REMEMBER TO DRIVE SAFE and keep warm" then slam the door in his face so you can devour the much needed pie.

and GODS help us if we were to ever close or not be able to deliver. we heard sooo much complaining bitchin, and howling the one time we did like 5 years ago.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Boondock Saints 2 was worth it.....I just didn't realize it until we went to the theater the day AFTER the mini-ice storm. It would have been worth it.

Of course, the theater is only about 2 miles from my apartment and I was just being stubborn and refusing to go out in the crap.

Racket Man, I'm sensing much hostility.... Have you considered counseling?

Seriously, though, to all the delivery people here who work in that crap: THANK YOU! That kind of weather makes me hurt so bad that there's no way I can cook and my kids are only just getting to the age where they can fend for themselves on those nights. I say stay warm and drive safe, but I tip very well in those weather conditions.

I always try to tip (Usually pay by credit), but if I order a pizza in bad conditions (it's not that far for them, only about a 5 minute drive) I give them 5€ as a tip.

every now and then delivery drivers have bad days. unfortuneately these seem to frequently occur during really really crappy weather or during peace on Earth, Good will toward men type festive holidays.

sometimes it just gets to us. sometimes I find myself feeding off the blantant/obvious/distain/hostility being Jedi-mind-tricked/Vulcan-mind-melded from my customers

In fairness some people have jobs in crappy locations where they really need to drive in. If I couldn't walk to work I'd have MUCH lower standards for when it's too dangerous for me to get in. And that's with a foot of snow, maybe it was heavy snow where that woman was? (Unlikely given that she went to the theatre)

We had somewhere between 4"-6". Yeah, I know, those of you from the northern tier states think I'm joking, but down here in the Carolinas people freak out when even a dusting starts to fall.

Honestly, there was no reason anyone should have been off work, but I once lived in North Dakota, where snow days only occurred when you measured snowfall in feet, not inches, so this insanity boggles me.
