  • Of course I work here!

Well it happened. I guess I just can't escape the front desk.

I was staying at a hotel using my employee discount. I was at the computer in the lobby late at night and I heard "Excuse me! Excuse me!" I ignored it at first because I didn't think they were talking to me.

Then I heard it louder and the snapping of fingers "Hello! I'm wanting to check in!"

Seconds later the desk clerk emerged from the back. This happened all in the span of maybe one minute.

Apparently I am now a desk clerk 200 miles away from my original hotel! I looked the part too: white t-shirt, tethered blue jeans, slippers. I guess I just have that "I work in a hotel" look.

Mm, you're not alone. I get people asking me if I work there when I'm in full store garb, and when I'm on my break just walking around looking at stuff, untucked, they just come right out and ask me questions. No hello or anything. "Glue?" "Plumbing?" "Zebras?" Sometimes they're not even questions. "Electric." "Pistachio." "Dean Reynolds." "Zombies."

Then I give them the stare. Sometimes I say "... oh, ... I was going to ask you. " But I don't have the heart to actually say it, so I just say "I think I saw it over there," and run the fsck away. When I am on break, I am an entirely different character. Leave me alone. I am one of you.
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."

It's probably the thousand-yard stare and the slumped, submissive "don't hurt me anymore" posture that does it. That was how they were always able to tell I worked in a hotel at any rate.
Drive it like it's a county car.

You must have that "I work in a hotel look"

No matter what I happen to be wearing, when I go shopping people ask me where stuff is... So I clearly have the "I have worked in retail look"

Nope, you have it wrong, lol. Its not the "I work in retail look", its the "I look like i know what im shopping for, so i MUST work there" look. Its the look of comprehension, of understanding. Of course, sometimes we have brain farts...but for the most part...

The other night, I was in Wal-Mart doing some last minute holiday shopping. I had several people stop me, thinking that I worked there. I was wearing a dress shirt, tie, and dress pants, as I had come from the place where I really work, so I guess it wasn't too outrageous that the customers thought I worked there. The managers at Wal-Mart sometimes dress the way I was dressed.
