  • Got my groceries with a side of pwnge.

I swung by the grocery store to grab some granola bars and a few other goodies to restock my desk at work. I happened to be checking out in the line next to the supervisor station and I overheard this gem.

WS - Wage slave (I used to cashier at this store and the title fits)
    MiM - Moron in Management

MiM: WS, you had a no call no show yesterday, so this is your last chance.

WS: I wasn't scheduled yesterday. Didn't you get my message?

MiM: You originally weren't scheduled, but I made changes to the schedule which you didn't check.

WS: But there weren't any changes when I got my schedule. I signed and dated it, too. Aren't you supposed to call me about that?

MiM: The changes were made before you checked the schedule. I signed and dated my changes. Now, if you can't handle working what you're scheduled then we'll have to let you go.

WS: Hold on, I need to check something. (she runs off and returns with the schedule print outs while the abysmally slow express cashier continues to make me miss the SCOs that they pulled out of this store. )

WS: Okay, see, I checked the schedule and signed it on Thursday, and there weren't any changes then. But, I see you have your changes initialed and dated on Wednesday. I think you made a mistake on the day and maybe forgot to call me?

MiM: See, you can't do this. You just said my changes were dated Wednesday and you checked it on Thursday. Now, are we going to have to talk to the store manager again or are you done fooling around?

WS: Well, see, I checked it on Thursday with no changes. And then you dated your changes on Wednesday. But if you think we should talk to <presumably store manager's name> about it, then that's fine. Just, I think you made a mistake because down here on the bottom of the page is the time it was printed out which was Thursday, about 15 minutes before I signed, so how did you make changes to the printed schedule the day before it was printed?

Me: *snerking and fighting not to cheer out loud*

MiM: Um, well, that can't be right! Uh...alright, fine we'll just let it go this time. But if you see changes to the schedule you better follow them!

    WS: So no write up?

MiM: ... No. No write up.

WS: Okay, cool! I'm going to my register then.

And I still hadn't reached the belt to actually put my groceries down but WS went to work and MiM stood and muttered under his breath. So, good on her. If I hadn't been running behind I'd have spoken to the store manager about it myself just so WS was covered. Might do so tonight, anyway, since I'm going back to the store.

That 'Manager' as he does not deserve to be called, sounds like he's purposely trying to get employees in-trouble. Maybe he doesn't like them or is trying to open a slot for a friend. Sick bastard.

It's either that, or he was trying to do a CYA for a mistake he made on the schudele, and pushed the blame off onto an employee...I've seen that allot..
Just sliding down the razor blade of life.

What an assbag. What's the point in even having a schedule if it's going to be changed without her knowledge? I would hate to work for a boss who would expect me to work whenever he needs me, let alone expect me to read his mind as to when he decides to change to schedule.

Why do retail managers treat their subordinates as if they were little kids to be disrespected & treated as if they were a hassle rather than the hard workers that they are? That kind of treatment doesn't motivate anyone to do their best at work.
          I've seen that a lot at Wal-Mart.

Ugh, I hate that. I once had a manager at WD ask me why I was an hour late for my shift. She'd written a 2 over top of the 3 on the schedule, but after I'd already looked at it. She was also the kind who treated me like a teenager, despite the fact that we were the same age, right down to the very day. I couldn't figure out how such a ditz was front end manager, until I saw recently that my suspicions about her and the store manager were confirmed. They are now a happily married couple

I do think you should let the person higher up than that manager know what happened.
They changed the schedule on me a few times when I worked at my last job.

True and as for the ones that do treat their employees like a pine of dung, I can explain it in two words:

                      POWER TRIP.

I've seen it a lot when I worked in retail.

The only manager I had who treated most of the cashiers like children was the CSM who was notorious for "forgetting" people's breaks, and hated being called on it. Sometimes I got the impression that she didn't like that I knew as much as I did about cashiering when I only had two months' experience. Nevermind that the experience came from three consecutive summers at another store while still single (which also explained some of the more "old-fashioned" approaches I used, such as using the light instead of the unreliable pager).

I had this once, as a day off with 4 days working on either side. I was told I was late for a shift I never had, then told it was just modified after I left the day before, and by the person who phoned me who did not have the authority to make the change. Oh yeah, I lost it on her, not that I liked her anyways. (neither did a number of staff for that matter)

I throw on my uniform and get over to work, only to be greeted by my manager and the head CSR, apologizing for the mistake and asking if I wanted to go home. I told them it took me a half hour to get there in the first place, so there was no point in leaving so they only had me work a 4 hour shift. I went to my till and no staff member dared approach me for the rest of the week. Good plan too, as limbs would have been lost if they had, despite me being entirely pleasant to customers.

That reminds me of when I worked at Canadian Tire. There were three spots where the schedules were kept, the only schedule that showed a change of shift for me was the one kept in the the area where the new head cashier had told everyone we weren't allowed to be unless we had been schedule for there.

The next day I was in a meeting with the HC and store manager who actually back the head cashier over the change (that I was never asked about or called about.). He didn't even pretend to care that I was upset over it. I walked out after that meeting.

In my mind, changing an employees schedule without asking or even calling about it if it's an emergancy is wrong, and dating a change falsely (or hiding a change) should be illegal.

                            "I dunno. Atheists, probably."

There might be some law or company policy on the subject depending where you live. However I know nothing on employment law and even if I did it would be UK specific so you'd best call the local labour board to check.
