  • Oblivious Driver

Was in town with my aunt and young cousin who was in a stroller at the time.
Bus was rather packed, and as we were getting off I got off first to lift the stroller front while my aunt managed the back.

But lo... whats this? The oblivious driver closes the door. I shove my leg in to stop it getting to the stroller (thankfully this door turned out to be rather weak) and shout out to get attention, while my aunt did to.

It took half the bus (and this was a packed bus) shouting at the driver to open the door. He hadn't started driving tho, thank $deity, so I didn't need to see how fast I could hop sideways.

Even the little white-trash city I grew up in has buses that can't start when the door is open (even a little bit) or when someone is standing on the step. Of course, it took a little boy getting caught in a bus door and dragged to his death before they instituted this.

There have been a couple incidences here of people's bags/purses being caught in the doors and dragged away. Luckily the owners had the presence of mind to just let go (well, all but one woman on the red line one night--while it seems like there was some fault on the conductor's end, she was trying to squeeze on while the doors--which do not reopen--were closing).

When I was a bus driver the doors had an "interlock" feature. I doubt if this has changed. There was absolutely no way the bus would move without both doors closed, unless you used the override switch. An override was necessary so the bus could be driven back to the shop (empty) when the door was damaged, but the bus should not have been operating in service with the override on.

I don't know how Appollo's deal happened, but the bus COMPANY was definitely liable.

Of course, I would not have permitted a baby in a stroller on the bus either. A baby, yes. A stroller, yes. But take the baby out while you're on the bus and fold the stroller up. Not safe to have a child in an unsecured thing with wheels on it.

But we don't because lots of it's disgusting.
