  • As told to me by my mom...

My mom was in her local Winn-Dixie this morning. They apparently had a sale on roasts. Buy one, get one free. The smaller of the two roasts is, of course, the free one - so she tried to pick similar weights, so as to get the best deal.

So she proceeds to the check out with her other items.

Both items scanned and the lower weight/price one didn't come off. She was charged for both roasts.

She advises the cashier, who pulls out the ad, and checks that they're the correct roasts for the BOGO sale and calls a manager, who voids the lower price roast, thereby giving her the free roast.

The manager walks away, advising she needs to go correct things in the computer, so that the roasts scan correctly.

The cashier then says to my mom "So, which roast did you want to put back?"

My mother asked her to repeat, since she didn't know what she meant.

The cashier repeated it and my mom said "I'm keeping both roasts. It was buy one get one free."

The cashier said "But you only paid for one"

My mom says "Yes, I know - because it's buy one get one free. That's why your manager removed one of them from the total"

The cashier rolls her eyes and calls for a member of the meat department to come to the checkout.

My mother asks what she's doing.

Cashier says "Well, I dont want the roast to spoil - so I am calling someone from meat to put one of them back"

My mom says "But they're both my roasts. I *paid* for one, and the *second* one is free"

The cashier finally understood and let my mother leave with her roasts.

Jesus - the stupid - it burns.

Wow. I would have to be heavily medicated before I made a mistake like that. Good thing I called in sick today.

        ....W....T...F?

....was the cashier in her own little Lala land during the whole transaction or something? Cause it really does take some serious skill to be that out of the loop when the whole thing takes place right in front of you.

I'd vote for auto pilot brain burp. Cashier's so used to people wanting to put stuff back when they've picked up too much that the auto pilot equates void with stuff to return.

I could see it, but I think there'd have to be something extra going on to be that in to auto-pilot. Maybe they didn't sleep well or something, I dunno. Whether there's a reason or not, *my* brain is gonna run screaming now.

I'm betting the cashier never actually understood and just let your mom do whatever she wanted.

Oh, jeez. I had a bad bout of insomnia last week and was running on about 9 hours of sleep in three days and even then I was never that out of it.

Funny you guys should mention it - as she was leaving, she *did* overhear the cashier saying something like '10:30 (am) is WAYYY too early for me. I'm not awake yet'

Now granted, I work a crazy shift and am a big-time night owl, but even *I* couldnt blame this level of stupidity on being tired. I vote for 'alternate substances' too.
