  • SC actually gets place closed down...(long)

...and there is going to be hell to pay!

I live in a small Victorian town, of a population of about 5000. Everyone knows everyone's business, it is quite a tight community. There are also only about four pubs in the town (none of them are mine, I work in another town). Three of the four pubs have only been around for the past 30 years or so, the fourth has been around for nearly 100 years. It has quite a history in the town, and several of my friends have worked there, one of which is now a manager.

The 100 year old pub is closing down, because of a noise complaint.

About three years ago, there was a huge uproar in the town because the council wanted to build a series of apartments opposite the pub. The plans were put on display, and people were upset to see that they had designed ultra-modern looking apartments. A petition went around town and was delivered to the council, asking them to rethink the design so that it fitted in better with the towns Victorian look. This was denied and the apartments were built anyway. The apartments would look brilliant in a modern town, but with everything else around it being Victorian, they look like a complete eyesore.

The pub in question makes it money from bands. They have a lot of live music from rock to classical to jazz. They have enough variety for anyone. Their band nights are always awesome, and I always tried to attend as many as I could. Bands have been playing there almost as long as the pub has been there. Although the bands can be very loud, they never play late into the night. Most of them finish at 9:30pm, and at the latest 10pm. In my opinion, a very reasonable hour. The pub itself is not open much later, closing at 11pm on weekdays and 12am on weekends.

Someone from the new apartments complained about the bands, saying that the noise was keeping him or her awake all night (despite them finishing at 10pm). They wrote a letter to the pub, and then a letter to the council.

The council responded by taking away the pubs music licence.

Now, this is the council who ignored the pleas of 5000 people who didn't want the apartments in the first place, responding to a complaint to someone who knew the pub was there before he or she moved in!

The pub could not keep afloat without the music licence. People did not want to drink there anymore. There were no more shows, no more bands, and their business completely disappeared. This has spiralled in just six weeks.

The owner has announced they are closing the pub. The final day is this Sunday It is terrible, because a close friend of mine has lost his managers job, and around twenty people are now unemployed.

To say the town is outraged is an understatement. Like I said, it is a small town, and people talk. A petition is already going around protesting the removal of the music licence, but that will probably get ignored as well, just like the other one.

I plan on attending the last night. They are having a band perform at the end just to poke fun. What can the council do? Close them down?

I now feel sorry for the innocent people living in those apartments. Can you imagine what will happen when that pub closes its doors for the final time on Sunday night when it is crowded with several drunken residents of the town? There is already talk of a group of several hundred people forming to throw eggs at the apartments!

Whomever wrote that letter better hope it doesn't come out that it was s/he who did so, or s/he's likely to need to be moving to another town post haste.

Sounds like something happened in Sydney.

Property developer builds a block of high price flats next to Luna Park.
Residents complain about noise of living next door to amusement park
      Luna Park gets shut down.

Thankfully its been able to re-open although with rather restricted hours.

I had wondered about that lawsmeister. When I was reading on the history of Luna it seemed like it used to be open practically 24/7 but now it had hours. Would have been nice to visit when i was recovering from jetlag to have a bit of fun there...at 3am.

But really I never understand this. We have dogs, neighbor gets told about dogs and how they bark at the same time every night due to our routine. They move in next door, and then complain about the dogs. Couldn't do anything since we had their realator put in a clause in their purchase agreement for the dogs.

Just standard government SOP. In a nearby town residents complain about the planes flying over head, despite buying a house built in the 1980's-1990's near a airport that has been around in some form since the 1940's as a military base i believe and primarily commercial since the late 60's. Now they want the airport/there reps to force the airport to change the flight paths.

I'm not sure which pisses me off more -- the fact that the people who actually lived there told the powers that be that they didn't want the apartments, and were basically told "Fuck you, we're doing it anyway!", or that people moved in and complained about something that was there long before they were.

On a note somewhat related to the latter, back in the early 90s I had tickets to a concert featuring some of my favorite bands -- I think it was Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and maybe one other band I'm not remembering. It was in Hershey, and since this was long before they built the Giant Center, it was to be at the Hershey Park Arena.

Apparently the residents pissed and moaned about the upcoming concert, and it ended up being cancelled. I didn't find out until the day of the concert (although I have to admit, that's better than the other time I didn't find out until I drove two hours to where it was supposed to be.)

There had been concerts at the Arena for many years, and I'm sure most of the people who bitched were people who moved there after the fact, knowing full well that they sometimes have concerts. I understand not liking certain music, and I know what I listen to is not for everyone. But if a place is going to have concerts, there's going to be a time or two that it's going to be a type of music you don't like.

That really sucks for the pub; not fair at all. Hope the townsfolk find-out who complained and makes their life heck!

Where I used to live there was a golf course for years and years, then a developer built condos right beyond the range, where just about every ball hit would go. Of course, the condo owners complained and the golf course had to build a 3-story fence with netting to keep balls from hitting the condos. It looks weird, like they made a trap to catch a dinosaur or something!

That sucks big time. IT sounds like the council is on the take. I'd imagine that an apartment owner could probably throw a few bills the concil's way.

That seems really harsh. One person complained about the noise, and instead of saying "Hey, try to sound proof your place better or find a way to keep it down," they just take away the music licence.
The WHOLE TOWN complained about not wanting the modern apartments, but they say "whatever" to all of them?

Are these council members part of the community?
Can the place be saved as some sort of community historical landmark?
And the fact that all those people are jobless now?
That whole thing really pisses me off!

We have two airports where I live--Allegheny County, and the "big" airport...Pittsburgh International. The small county airport isn't all that bad. Living in the area for 30+ years, you just tune it out. Of course it helps that most of the flights go on during the day At least they're no longer buzzing our neighborhood with a helicopter around 8pm any more. Every damn night, it would make multiple fly-bys. Never did find out what that was all about---but when it started, people were pissed! That went on for about a year, until many complaints stopped it. In that case, I can understand being pissed. There was no reason for the fly-bys at all, other than to make noise, and piss people off.

What I *can't* understand, are the rich idiots moving out towards the big airport, to "get away from it all." How those little towns turn into the metropolis they're "getting away from" is a rant in itself... But, what happens, is they'll move out there, and within hours, they're bitching about the noise. I mean, what did you expect, you live next door to the fucking airport! And it's not just a passenger airport either--quite a bit of cargo, and military transports fly in and out of there. Of course, when that place was built (1944, razed and the terminal rebuilt in 1992), the area was still pretty rural

Of course, there were people living near the county airport. Right at the end of the main runway too. For whatever reason, there was a trailer park just over the hill. I'm sure they too bitched about the noise. But, again, they *chose* to live there, and most people ignored their complaints. That is, until a few years ago--a plane went off the runway, and took out said trailer park Then someone listened, and the trailers were removed. Even now, you can still see the former park on Google Earth.

I really gotta wonder what goes through peoples heads when they make these decisions. It's like they wanted to alienate as many people as possible.

That totally sucks. We had something similar happen near here - there was a speedway outside of town that was very popular - both stock car races and "crash-to-pass" - it had been there for more than 30 years and was hugely popular. Well some well-to-do people decided to build a housing complex nearby, KNOWING ahead of time that the speedway was a noisy place to be on weekends, and then they complain about the noise after they've moved in, and the city council shuts the speedway down. I hate people who do things like this.

Is the council at least an elected body?

Two UK examples of the same thing that pop into my mind:

Alton Towers, one of the UK's larger amusement parks has been there for quite some time and around halloween tends to have a firework display. Residents of the nearby village, knowing full well where they were moving to, have complained about the noise of people screaming on the rollercoasters, the noise of the fireworks and the ammount of traffic going through the place to get to the park. This has resulted in a lot of rumours over time that the park is either going to be closed or will have restrictions placed on it.

Edit: I've just done some checking and it turns out that Alton towers were taken to court by one, yes one, family over how loud their firework displays were and were given a noise abatment order restricting them to 3 displays at no more than 40 decibels outside the park, resulting in them abandoning their annual firework display. It's worth noting thet firework displays had been going on there since the 1800s.

The other is the Top Gear test track (Top gear is a motoring entertainment show on the bbc) It's in surrey and used to be a functioning airbase. This was built in the Second world war! It's been in prety much constant use since it was built, largely for aeroplane testing etc. Now it's used by Top Gear. The top gear crew race and test cars on there for about six weeks of the year while filming. Once again, knowing what they're moving next to people complain about the noise, leading to rumours of top gear being fined/axed/moved etc.

                              People will complain about anything.
