  • Dude, seriously??

So, I went computer shopping today, since I've been on the prowl for a new laptop. I went to a local computer store, and started browsing, and one of the employees came over, introduced himself, (can't remember his name though, he irked me so much)

Now, I know there are mixed opinions on every brand out there. Way of life. Personal preference, mileages may vary, what have you. I'm not even going to list the brands I was looking at, but for the sake of the story, let's say this store carries brands A, B, and C. I showed up with a list of specs I was looking for, gleaned from various sources who were all willing to sit down with me and explain to my less thank knowledgeable self what, exactly, would best suit me.

Well, the stupid employee asked me what I was looking for, I told him, and I explained my budget and minimum specifications. I also told him, that I preferred brands A and B, but completely refuse to consider brand C, just from personal experience, and from watching friends and family deal with the same craptastic issues themselves.

What does he do? Leads me to a floor model that is easily $150 OVER my max budget. And it's brand C.

    Oh boy, here we go...

Me: Well, that's a nice model and all, but I'm afraid it's outside my budget range.
Him: Do you have a credit account with us?
Me: No, and I'm sorry, I'm not going to open a credit card to pay for a computer.
Him: Then how were you going to pay?
Me: I was going to pay for it out of my own bank account... (Not that it's any of his business!!!!)
Him: Oh, well, you can get one of our credit accounts, and then the cost would only be $xx per month, and you can still get this one!!
    Me: No. Besides, it's brand C, and I prefer to go with A or B. I won't get a brand C.
    Him: Why not?
Me: Personal preference. I'd just rather have a brand A or B.
    Him: Brand C is better.
Me: >.> Again, personal preference, but I've dealt with brand C before, and I don't want to again.

At this point, I try to head over and look at a few other models, that are brands A and B and more within my price range. I find one that I like.

Him: That one won't work for you.
Me: It's got what I'm looking for, it's in my price range, and it's a brand B, which I'm ok with.
Him: You should go with brand C.
Me.: No. (getting irked now. short clipped answers it is!)
Him: I've had brand C forever. Even when I bought a desktop tower 6 or 7 years ago it was brand C, and it's still working. I don't know what you did with yours, but brand C is great.
    Me: Bye!

And I proceed to walk out. No commission for him, no buying anything from that store, and I wish to gods I remembered his name because if ever there was a reason for a complaint letter... >.>

I think I'm just going to start buying everything I possibly can online from now on...jeebus.

Online is the best if you already know what you want. Any store that has salesmen is going to pull something like that. I bought my laptop online, and last year when I got a notebook it was in a store but the guy was going to give me a discount to match another store that didn't have any stock. I do have one computer store that I like to go to for most things, because they sell parts more than whole computers, and therefore having a commissioned salesman would be useless and would just irritate their geek customer base.

He's probably getting a spiff from Brand C for selling their product (in addition to any commission he's getting). Not surprising in the computer industry (I got them all the time when I was selling them).

Still, it's really irritating when someone can't (or won't) take no for an answer.

Woah, pushy much?? How is it his place to tell you what you need? It sort of reminded me of that Office episode where Dwight gets Andy to sell him his SUV cheap by using high pressure sales tactics: "Come on! Do it! Do it! Do it! Five Four Three Two One!!" In real life, though, it's just annoying

Salespeople like that really make any shipping cost worthwhile...

Good luck with your computer purchasing though

Seconded newegg. I bought my ASUS Netbook from them, and love it. Never had a single problem through them. Even used them as my primary parts supplier when I ran my PC repair business.
              Coworker: Distro of choice?
              Me: Gentoo.
Coworker: Ahh. A Masochist. I thought so.

                I third Newegg.

Fortunately, I don't have these problems because I build my own PCs. Though I've seen and known some computer salesmen like that. I've also gone along as 'wingman' on a few buying trips to ward off just those sort of encounters.

If nothing else, I can act as a distraction while the person actually buying stuff goes and gets what they want. Leaving me to waste the salesman's time and test his knowledge of computers. ***Tech humor alert*** I once asked if, and had a salesman assure me that, the computer I was looking at ran 100mhz of memory and could handle 1,500 megs of calculations per second while running off a 12 volt CMOS battery.

Needless to say, he critically failed his Profession (PC Salesman) roll and did not profit from his attempt to just agree with whatever came out of my mouth.

Try having boobs. Apparently having them without some sort of accompanying chest hair makes you an idiot. The jerks at the auto parts store learned their lesson a long time ago, but I don't want to bother teaching you one.

(And I WAS going to get my new Toshiba Portege from tigerdirect, but they didn't like my card for some reason.....but Toshiba did, and I got a discount).

Oh yeah, and when I used to go in to Chauvenistic Computer Store by myself and try to get parts or programs...only to have the Salesman treat me like I was an idiot and direct me to the wrong thing, sorry honey, I let myself get guilted into that once and only once, and you're not nearly as cute as he was (and you don't have the nice Brit accent to go with it).

Y'know, the Tool Store and Welding Shop don't seem to think I'm an idiot because I have boobs, what's the deal with Computer Store? Though I DO feel awesome when I get what I need, Salesman says it the wrong thing, only to have Awesome-Hawt-Nerd Bf come up and say that, yes, I did get the right thing *all by myself*, it still shouldn't take him saying something to get you to back off of me.

Sorry, small rant, went from idiot computer guy to awesome tool guy that machines me parts for my lathe as I specify according to a drawing on a napkin (its an antique hand crank, I can't get anything directly for it LOL).

Do guys have problems with girls treating them like idiots in the kitchen section of a store or anything? I think I'd feel better if they did.

I would have had a field day with that guy. I cannot stand persistent people who feel the need to question your decisions. I wonder if he was purposely trying to lose a sale. EPIC FAIL

BTW was brand C Dell by any chance?

Oh yeah, that's the other thing I like about my favourite shop -- they don't blink when a female walks into their store. It's Canada Computers, if I failed to mention them the first time. I have used several of their stores in different cities and never had a bad experience.

Memory Express in Western Canada. They've got stores in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg so far, and the ones I've been to are uniformly excellent. They know their stuff, no pressure sales, not being a girl, I can't speak to that, but I doubt they'd make much of it.
