I had one of my cats catnapped by someone who lived in my neighborhood. He disappeared one day, and I didn't see him again.

Until about a year later when he showed up at the door with an advanced state of tooth decay and suffering from anemia. The bastards had taken lousy care of him. After a lot of really expensive vet work, they still couldn't save him.

It's a really good thing I have no way to track those people down....

      Blah....That is terrible.

As annoying as Zappa (my cat) can be, I'd hate to see him get catnapped.

Andara, that is a really sad story...poor kitty knew who his real people were, who would take care of them. I'm sorry you couldn't save him. At least he made it back to you in the end so you at least knew what happened to him.

A couple years ago our puppies were nearly stolen from our yard. We lived on a dead street, only a couple houses, and right by a junk yard. It was basically an alley with a street name.

Anyway we had a tie out for our two puppies and we put them there to do their business. Some teenage girl came into the yard and tried to unhook them from their collars. Fortunately our neighbor saw her and asked what the hell she was doing, and she bolted.

Now we have a purebred Siberian Husky, and people are always commenting on how beautiful she is. I wouldn't put it past someone to steal her. But she's fairly inaccessible even though our yard isn't fenced off.

I've never thought of someone stealing my dog, it's scary to think about.

It's probably a good thing people are afraid of my Shar Pei. He wouldn't hurt you, but he's got "that face" as I've heard it said.

I dont know what Id do if someone stole my puppers.

Shes ran away twice (dug out from under the fence) but both times, I was given a call (our number is on her tag) to tell us some people around the corner had her. Same people found her both times, lol.

              These stories are heartbreaking...

We've found our neighbor's dogs two times. The first time, apparently it'd been gone for a week, and when we got it back to our neighbor, she just started crying with joy.

We'd come to the conclusion that someone must have stolen the dog, and was either let go, or escaped, and had taken that long to come back around here.

The second time the dog got out through an open gate, ended up in our yard.

Sometimes puppies get stolen to sell to laboratories. It's sad, but true.

Anyone who would actually steal a loved pet, from a yard or wherever, has no human empathy. Therefore, they have no real loving feelings for the animal, and may only see it as a pay check or status symbol.

Luckily noone would ever steal my cat, we joke that he is lucky we got him from the RSPCA - anyone else would have taken him back!

I hope no one would ever steal our dogs. I know the entire family would be heartbroken if it happened. Luckily we have a long gravel driveway so we know whenever anyone pulls up.

As for pups running off, I've lost count of how many wandering dogs I've found in our front yard over the years. Most of them have tags but there were a couple that didn't. The most memorable one was an elderlyish man whose three labs had gotten away. I ended up keeping them overnight until I could get in touch with the county animal control to let them know I had found them. He came by my house to pick them up and got a very stern talking to about the importance of ID tags.
