  • Female student wanted a campus cop to be her chauffer

The university I work at, which is a commuter campus, has a shuttle bus service for the students. One of the shuttle bus stops is located in front of the main bldg.

I overheard this when I was signing the log book at campus police this morning before clocking in. I pick up the keys to the Visitor parking booth, & sign the log book.

A campus cop was telling one of the guys at dispatch what happened.

This incident happened yesterday when it was raining & cold outside.

    Here is the story:

He was on duty, & he parked the cop car he was driving in front of the main bldg. near the shuttle bus stop. A female student saw the cop car, walked up to it, he rolled down the window, & she said "good, you are my driver today." He said "ma'am, I can see a shuttle bus pulling up to the bus stop in my rear view mirror." The female student said "oh...but you are faster."

Unfortunately, he did not give her a ride to wherever she was going to.

If the shuttle bus is running, asking a cop for a ride is just plain stupid (at least on my campus as there is nowhere on campus the shuttle bus won't drive). If you have to walk somewhere late at night, you can call for an escort or if the bus isn't driving SOMETIMES they will drive you. I tried to thumb a ride from campus police once when I had to walk and it was really storming out. He laughed at my attempt but didn't give me a ride They have driven me to the hospital before though when I needed to follow an ambulance.

The only time any of the campus officers up here will chaffeur anyone around here, is if they are extremely hurt or sick and need to go to the emergency room because the health office is closed. Of if they take you into protective custody.

And even if you are sick they might not still take you. I remember one time a friend of mine had gotten sick, had a sore throat and everything, and right efore she was going to bed she noticed her throat had a swollen thing the size of an orange. We were going to take her to the hospital, but she couldn't afford the ambulance ride and we had just had a snowstorm two days prior, so none of our cars had been shoveled out. We called CamPo, and they flat out refused to take her, first because "We don't want what she's got" and then because "We don't want to be responsible for her death enroute, if it happens."

now on my campus sometimes security would give me a lift to my car
but only because i was parked way out in the middle of nowhere and it was getting late
        and they always offered

I used to live in a little rinky dink town, and walked quite a ways to work on the overnights in the winter and more often than not if a cop drove past while I was walking to work, they'd turn around and give me a ride. Then again, I did give them all the coffee they could handle when I worked.

I can't say I blame them. They aren't a hospital service either. This is why we have ambulances in the first place. Didn't have a friend she could call with a car? :P
