A friend of mine works in a bookstore, these are from her. More 'huh?' than sucky, but fun nonetheless.

    1) Woman comes in and explains that her son really likes the manga books, but doesn't like the pictures. Do they have any manga without the pictures? And no, she doesn't want a novel.

    2) Woman comes in looking for 'The Wrath of Grapes'. Y'know, that horror novel where the grapes take over the vineyard and run amok... ok, maybe not.

        Please don't wine about it.

What the heck did she think manga was, anyways? Maybe her kid had a book with illustrations that he didn't like, and she misunderstood what he meant when he said he didn't like the pictures.

Sucks that she had to jam her stupidity in her face.

The odd thing is more than a few manga branch out into novels.
maybe he was saying he didn't like the art in that book and the mom didn't understand?

Are you sure she wasn't looking for The Wrath of Grapes? It's a book about the wine industry.

Or maybe she was looking for The Wrath of Grapes? It is subtitled "A Complete Hangover Cookbook and Guide to the Art of Creative Suffering"?

Or perhaps even The Wrath of Grapes? It is a murder mystery that apparently involves a vineyard.

Actually, there is something like what the woman wanted. They're called 'Light Novels'. They re-tell Manga in a semi-novel form, as I understand it. I'm not entirely sure what's different, as I've never picked one up, but you can find them, for some manga, on Amazon.

                    Boo on the puns.

And yes, there are light novels for various anime/manga series. Problem is though, is that some of them still contain the "naughty" images that some parents may not want.

There are some novels for "Ghost In The Shell" that I've seen shelved with manga, maybe she was thinking of something like that?

I know Vampire Hunter D has some novels out also here in the states. In Japan, its not unusual to have a series that has an anime, manga, and novels running at the same time. I know both Slayers and Haruhi have novelizations out, and don't get some of my friends started on the Gundam series...
