Been thinking about this one for a few days now, and I still haven't sorted out what happened.
Couple days ago, after getting off on the day shift, I ran up to the local super center (yeah, wal-mart) to pick up some things. For some reason I ended up back in electronics where I saw a normal suck incident, and one...well as I said I haven't quite sorted this one out yet.
The normal suck was your every day suck. Nothing really special there.
I was in electronics around oh..five or six, and noticed that there wasn't anyone there. Since I didn't have anything else better to do, I opted to wait it out some, instead of heading up to the front. Myself and another customer chatted some, noticing that there wasn't a single employee around. After a moment, this stockman came by, glanced at us and asked nicely if we'd been helped, to which I replied "Been standing here a good fifteen minutes* and haven't seen anyone..." *Note: was closer to 20 or so, but you get the picture. So the stock guy goes and gets on the phone, calling for customer assistance to electronics, and then he hangs around a bit. After another five minutes or so, he actually leaves to go find someone, only to return a few minutes later. "She'll be out in just a sec." he states and heads out to do his stocking thing.
Two, maybe three min later the lady comes out, drink in hand. Ignoring the lady before me, and myself, this woman mills around some in the phone area after clocking in. I swear she looked right at myself and the other lady and turned around, picked up the phone and chatted someone up before we hear "Well FINE!" over the phone and she hangs it up. Padding over she starts helping the other woman, and from the conversation I came to figure out that she was only there to sell phones, and wasn't really supposed to be checking out customers otherwise. The normal cashier for Electronics had simply vanished.
Here's where things took a strange turn.
As the lady is checking out the other woman, the Manager (note: Not sure if she was a zone manager, department manager or, ASM. I know she was high up though.) for that dept comes back. She'd been out at lunch when the Electronics associate had escaped, and naturally had no CLUE what had happened. So poor lady comes back into the middle of things. She quickly helps me, walking to open the case for me and help me with the few things I needed. During this this older gentleman sat in the middle of the aisle with one of those motorized carts, reading this DVD box. We passed right by him, and I heard the man ask for help, to which the manager responded politely "I'm with a customer right now sir, let me get this to the register where I can ring him out and I'll be RIGHT back. Two minutes tops!" The man nodded at her, and true to her word she checked me out and headed back.
I said it was strange right? Well I turned and hung around looking at movies some, having seen a box set I wanted. The manager helped the man, then took him up to the register to check out. Everything was fine. They chatted, he smiled, she laughed at something he said, and then it was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As soon as she finished checking him out, another customer came up with this HUGE tv box and the stockman from before. Having to come out around the counter, she said something to the elderly man to the effect of "Excuse me sir, could you please move up..." (He was in her way.) Rather than move the cart forward, the older man started to yell at the top of his lungs. Screaming about how DARE she ask him to move, he'd sat there wanting help all that time, but she helped me first! Who did she think she was asking him to move, and he was going to report her to the manager, and get her fired. She just stared at him, as did most everyone in that area. He continued to fit and fume, and then proceeded to back his cart up and grabbed the other customer's purse off the counter and SLUNG it as hard as he could, sending it flying across the aisle facing electronics. As he did so the man screamed something to the effect of "STUPID N(censored) lover!" (yes, the couple were mixed)
The old guy then moved the cart off and headed into the store like nothing happened. I didn't hang around long, my curiosity having been sated then, that's for sure, but as I left I have to wonder what the heck happened? I've never seen a customer have that kind of melt down like that before. He'd been all happy, all nice while they were checking out and then WHAM! I'm pretty certain the second customer called the cops on the guy, I know her husband looked like he would have killed the guy if he got his hands on him.
(note: Methinks someone needs to take his meds better...)
