    Guns 4 Tots

    This was on a preview for Border Security....basically a program in Australia that looks at the work of Customs, Quarantine and Immigration (not necessarily in that order).

    Next week's preview showed a guy having a gun pulled out of his bag at check-in. When asked who it was for, his reply? "It's for my 2 1/2 year old son."
    The customs person lays the gun aside and cautions him at that stage.
    His reply? "So what did I do wrong exactly?" Not in a way more like a way.

    To be fair, I do know parents who go ahead and buy firearms that they'll pass on to their kids later. One of my friends bought his three-year-old daughter a .22 rifle that he promptly secured in the safe in anticipation of the day when he knows that she's ready to learn firearms-handling safety and, eventually, go to the range. He's a proud father and is very excited about someday being able to share shooting sports with his kid, but he's thinking clearly about the situation.

    Or maybe the guy on TV is a complete idiot. Anything's possible.

      Last night, one of my guests was on his way to Alaska. At the Canadian border, they seized his guns and sent him back. Guns are a big no-no when crossing the border. People don't seem to realize that just because you're passing through, you are still entering Canada and need to follow customs rules!

        It's the same rule here.

        My guess is that the guns were seized, but I can't say for sure. I'll know more next week.

        The show itself is fairly good and doesn't attempt to show that <culture> is stupid, just that certain people are stupid.

        Exhibit A: lady gets extremely defensive and refuses to answer questions at a bag search. They upgrade to a frisk search and if they're still not satisfied, they'll either do a body scan or take that person to hospital if an internal concealment is suspected. Lady in question turned out to have an internal concealment and it was implied she also had an external concealment.

          Yeah my parents bought me a gun the week I was born, I also inherited a gun from the grandfather that same week. Less than a week old and the owner of two guns. Still stupid move on his part for trying to cross borders with it.

            Oh, yeah, I wouldn't try to go into/through certain countries with firearms regardless of whose guns they were (mine, gift, whatever).

              And an update regarding the FULL story.

              Guy went to Bali and fell victim to the street hawkers.

              The ENTIRE load he bought back consisted of two of the most illegal things to bring back home from Bali: weapons and porn.

              Among the load I saw/heard was:

              -traditional blow guns/blowdarts.
              -other wooden weapons.
              -pocket knives.
              -laser pointers (these are classed as weapons in Australia due to people shining them in the eyes of others and blinding them)
              -BB bullets. (I think there were some other bullets that I saw)
              -BB guns.
              -Other replica guns.

              And of course, the last two did not have orange plugs in them indicating that they aren't real.

              THe guy did declare them on his landing card so he didn't get hit with a fine (the absolute minimum is $220 AUD) although he was only intending to declare one of the BB guns. The entire lot was seized and destroyed.

              AS for the porn DVDs, they were viewed to ensure they didn't contain anything illegal (torture/rape porn, certain disgusting fetishes and/or child porn) and the guy was either allowed to keep one or lost one.

                dang that's a lot of stuff for his 2.5 year old son.

                now granted i'm not against the notion of teaching a youth about gun safety & how to shoot etc..

                but... the child should at least be taller than the weapon!

                  Not all of these were for his son. It was only the BB guns and the bullets.
