Actually, I've figured out that if I bring a wheeled suitcase with me on the bus, I can fit a few bags of soil in it, no problem, then just roll it home.
Forget the soil, I think you've just solved by Xmas shopping bad back! There's only so much that will fit in a backpack, after all. Thanks, lupo!

Have you considered taking a cab home?

When we were without a car, we'd bus to the store, get a full load of groceries, and then take a cab home. If it's not a long trip, it shouldn't cost too much and is well worth not having to deal with hauling heavy and bulky crap on and off the bus.
That may be true, but cab fares out here are ridiculous. Seriously, a store 5 miles away is what, at most a 3 minute drive? $10. Kid you not. I did try that route a time or two, and managed to get a cabbie who decided to take the LONG way around, and waited at every light. (so the meter could keep running.) and when I called the company, i was told the cabbie is an independent contractor, so not their fault.

No more cabs for Lupo, if I can help it. What I need to do is find a bike rack for my bike and start riding it more. Or a basket or something for the quick store runs. they're close enough I could probably get there in 20-30 minutes, which is just less than bus time, and if I buy too much, the buses have racks for bikes on the front.

No problem! I will occasionally take a smaller rolling carryon bag with me when it's a big grocery trip for the heavier stuff, so decided the bigger suitcase should work for this. It's great, and the stores I go to are few, and i usually go the same days every week, so some of the workers have gotten used to seeing me, and don't really question it anymore.

If you're short enough, i.e. no more than (quick conversion, hope it's right) about 5'5", then have you considered a bundle buggy? They're designed so that significantly less than half the population can use them, but if you're in that small fraction they're amazing.

Lupo's really tall, though, I thought. She's like THIS *Stands on tiptoe and stretches hands up* tall! Taller 'en me, at any rate.

....but then, a ten-year old tends to be taller than me. :\

Well in that case we'll send her plans once we get around to making one that my husband can use. (Hmmm... I also have the bike trailer. This is a PROBLEM). Even if you're tall it's still better than nothing, but they really need to make ones that aren't designed for short people.

Now, now, if you're the same height as EQ, then you're about as tall as a 12 year old. Not 10. TWELVE.

And yes, I'm tall. 6'0" exactly.

Hate to point this out, but a store that's 5 miles away is only a 3 minute drive if the driver is doing 100MPH. You might manage that in some stretches of New Mexico, or maybe Nevada, and maybe even some stretches in Texas (maybe, though I think the roads in Texas have more turns than the through the desert roads in those other states). However, I'm pretty sure that in the city/town limits for any town, 100MPH would be very badly frowned upon.

Oh, for the non-imperial users out there, that would be ~161kph.

<sulk> Aw, and here I was basking in my use of hyperbole...

I realize it wasn't that short of a drive, but according to google maps it's approximately 4.3 miles, 12 minute drive, and according to the fare calculator site found for the cab company it's...$21.80. Too rich for my blood, unfortunately, as that's a week's worth of grocery money right there.

                          Your cab company is expensive.

We've done a very similar trip (actual distance of 4.5 miles) and the total came to less than half of that.
