*as a wee bit of background info - my grocery store uses these yellow/orange "manager's special" tags on seafood and meat items getting close to their "use by" date, and for some reason, these tags don't scan properly on the self-checkout machines.*

Anyhow, so I'd picked up some sushi which had the said tags on them, and while I was having the attendant scan it for me by hand, a guy came up to the machine I was using, and the attendant told him it was being used by me. Normally people would back away/get in line, but this guy did not......he kept standing by the machine I was using, and asked if he could buy the t-shirt I was wearing. (it was a Motley Crue one from Hot Topic)

Without getting into all the details, the guy offered me $25, then $50 for my T-shirt, and couldn't understand why I was NOT interested in his offer......he literally wanted me to give him the shirt off my back. (and I'm not sure he was kidding, but who knows)

I can think of a couple of reasons for that. If they're a percentage off, then it's because the original price has to be typed in by hand, because the machine can't tell which price needs to be discounted. If it's a dollar amount, then it's because people often switch the coupon to a newer package, and the cashier needs to check the date.

That makes sense......especially since the attendant had to type in something and use the hand-held scanner to read the barcode. (reminded me a lot of checking in things at the library when the security tag on something screws up)

And sometimes they're just run off of a crappy printer, and so not all of the lines print properly, resulting in no-scans or mis-scans. I had that problem a lot at Walmart (though at least those markdown tags rang up for a set price, and were so firmly adhered to the package that any attempt to remove them resulted in obviously ripped labels).

Come to think of it, I have to wonder about that myself.......'tis not the first time I've received comments on that t-shirt, but this guy was definitely acting weird. (if he hadn't shut up and wandered off when he did, I would've said something to a store employee)

Mmm Used Food! Or at least that's what Dad and I call it at the grocery store when we see the "Reduced for Quick Sale" stickers on meats, or the produce and other random things in the cart in a back corner of the store.

As for the weird guy, I would have taken his number, gone home, changed clothes, called him, and met up with him back at the store.

Either that or tell him it was just from Hot Topic.

i'd take $50+ for a tshirt i could simply rebuy and still make a profit lol.

although yes... creepy and weird that he wanted to buy it off you right then and there.
