if i find myself in a situation where i ask something, only to find out afterwards that there's a sign...

i usually just say, "Dang it would help if i actually read the sign"

kinda my way of acknowledging that i had been a bit daft

Regarding signs in general, I have always said this: the bigger the sign, the more people will ignore it.

I have seen people desperately trying to open a locked door with a 2'x2' sign in big block letters that reads "PLEASE USE OTHER DOOR!", and had complaints about a tiny little sign that read "$20 charge for rewinding DVDs".

I'm very glad I caught that before I asked. The fact that there was a sign about a DVD-rewinding charge makes me wonder how dumb the people that complained about it were...

Customers just do not see signs. Back when I worked at the supermarket, and it was being refitted; there were two HUGE signs out, front and back, to tell people this. And we still got customers trying to get in. Nothing really brings that fact home than having to tell customers that the store is being refitted and is therefore not open, than having to do so under a giant sign. -.-
