Okay, put the $20 in and I'll remember. You can ride free the next 39 times." The guy made a face, reached in his pocket, and pulled out $0.50.
That's awesome. I'm gonna mention it to my favorite driver.

Usually 2 or 3 times a year, I'll pay my fare with a 5 or even a 10 knowing I won't get any change, and I'll tell the driver "Just let that cover someone else who needs it."

In Boston, where I used to live, they use 'Charlie cards' a hard reloadable card. The 'I only have big bills' doesnt work in either place
I really wish my city would bring in reloadable cards. One of my few complaints about public transit here in Victoria is if you get a month pass, its only good for that calendar month. So if I were to buy a June pass today, on the 11th, its only good until the 30th, but I still have to pay full price.
They also have year passes, but only for senior citizens or people with disabilities.

It was not dark outside. There was a convenience store, a Quiznos, & other stores near the bus stop that she could have gone to & get change for her big bill. Maybe the business would not have broken her big bill, but she could have purchased something. So there was a way for her to get change for her big bill without asking the bus passengers.

While it is completely sexist, I too wouldn't tell a woman she'll have to walk alone at night because she doesn't have change for the bus.
Now, let's put this another way. It's night, and she only has a large bill to pay for her bus fare, and still gets by with riding for free? I'm wondering what kind of work she did this night to be in possession of a large bill, and then the bus driver allows her to ride for free. She must have whispered a different promise to pay to the driver out of everyone else's earshot.

Seriously, though, it makes me wonder how many times she's pulled this sob story in the past.

Definitely not fair. If the man had to pay and did so by fishing through his pockets, she should have been given the same treatment.

Except it's not the same circumstances.

Man: Has random change floating in pockets, that's it. Failed to plan.

Woman: Has a 20, which means she probably just stopped at an ATM. She probably did try to get change, but the bus came before she got somewhere she could.

Man: Tried to say "I have no cash, can I still ride?" (asking for freebie).

Woman: Said "I only have a 20, do you or the passengers have change?" (tried to pay, but couldn't at the time).

How is your first assumption about carrying a 20 not "stopped at an ATM"? That's the main reason people would have 20s, since most ATMs in the US only dispense 20s.
Those who are loudest about their qualifications, tend to have the least merit to their claims.

To quote Sam Winchester: "Dude, you're confusing reality with porn again!" :P

Come on, you can't be serious with this; as Arcade Man mentioned, she had a 20. Is that really considered a large bill in the US? That's 15 Euros; if that buys you the affections of a lady of the night where you live, I wanna move there .

But, seriously: yeah, men treat women differently from other men. Whether they like it or not. We're more lenient, more willing to "let something slide" than with our own sex. Some women fight against it, wanting no preferential treatment, others use it to their advantage. No, it's not fair, but then, what in life really is?

Yeah, maybe the busdriver is a sleazeball looking for favors from indecent women. Maybe he was just impatient, wanting to get on with his route and home to his wife, but didn't really care one way or the other. Or maybe he just didn't feel comfortable turning a woman away from his bus, even though it wasn't dark yet. I don't know.

The woman had an unspecified "big bill". I was thinking a $100 or maybe a $50.

I don't consider a $20 to be a large bill, but others might depending on their economic status. With a bus full of people, I would expect someone would have change. Whether they're willing to provide it is another question.

The fault stills lies with the woman for not planning ahead and having proper change for the bus she knew she was going to ride.
