  • Sighting from a hospital employee

This came from one of the employees I met at the hospital I volunteer at twice each month.

I met him last year while I was waiting for the bus one Saturday after my volunteer shift ended. He works in the cafeteria.

He saw me on the bus today, & he told me what happened one day at work.

He was working at the grill, & there was a line of customers. One customer who was in the line was talking on her cell phone. When it was her turn to order he said "may I help you? What would you like to order" twice. She ignored him & continued her cell phone conversation. So he waited on the other customers behind her. She noticed that he had not taken her order *how could he when she was on her cell phone*, & she got pissy. She asked him why he had not taken her order. He said "I tried to get your attention twice, but you continuned talking on your cell phone. I figured your cell phone was more important to you, & since there was a line of cusomers behind you waiting to place their orders, I waited on them instead." She was pissed at that point & said "I want to speak to your manager." His manager was up front, & so he pointed him out to her & said "he is right there." She spoke to him. The manager and the pissed off customer walked up to him. The manager asked him what happened. He repeated to him what he told the pissed off customer. The manager then turned to the customer & said "well...he said he tried to get your attention twice, but you continued talking on your cell phone."

    She left in a huff.

I've been noticing more signs going up at restaurants/stores that say "We realize just how VERY IMPORTANT your cell phone call must be, so we will refrain from servicing you until you finish. Have a great day."
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

I could just imagine what would happen if that becomes a problem at the bar.

Brand new sign: "You want a drink? Hang the hell up."
My other car is a Mackinaw.

What I like best about that story. The manager got both sides of the story while SC was still there. Normally the manager gets the employees side of the story a few minutes later and agrees with employee,SC has long since left feeling superior like she "defeated a bad employee". That happened to me a couple of years ago.

When I was at Kinko's, I didn't even hesitate. If you had a phone and were doing anything but saying "I have to go now" and hanging up by the time you got to me, you would be passed over like you were invisible.

When I still worked at The Sports Bar Known For Its Wings (and has the name of a scary Florida reptile in its name), most people were polite and considerate enough to either tell the person on the phone to hang on, or they'll call back. This is cool. I found, most people were respectful. It's those 10% of rudies that chap my ass.

I wouldn't even say HELLO to someone if they were yakking away on their cell. I don't wanna be accused of interrupting their precious convo, and I'd rather help the customers who aren't on their phones.

This one guy wanted to place a To-Go, and as I started to take his order, his phone rang, and he actually told ME to 'Hang on! Wait!!" as he accepted a call from his buddy to talk sports. He made me STAND THERE, upwards to 5 minutes, then got all pissed off when I took other customers who were waiting. There's never a day that I miss that restaurant!

There can be a decent wait before I'm available to take a customer back to my office, so I never mind if they are on the phone when I go to call them. But I will not actually TAKE them back until they hang up said phone.

What I hate is when someone answers the phone when I am already sitting down and helping them. It's one thing if they SAY something. I get that sometimes the call is important. Like the guy who's daughter is outside the country for the first time who saw the call was from her and 1) apologized and 2) just answered the phone long enough to find out if it was an emergency, then asked her to call back.

But if they instead demand(not ask) that I "hold on a minute" and then get into a conversation about where they want to eat that night....

                Grrr...

Didn't the half-hour wait clue you in that we are BUSY? You aren't the only person waiting for me to become available. Get off the damn phone and let me do my job!

So does my local DMV. And one of the Subways I frequent.

The DMV one is great. Processing registration for your car only takes about 5-10 minutes, not 45.
