  • Don't Call Me!

Phone rings. I answer. (EDIT: Caller ID says "Unidentified.")

Recording: "We have an important message for you. Please hold."

Okay, I have time. After about a minute.

Recording: "We have an important message for you. Please hold."

    I hang up.

First of all, I'm on a 'no call' list. Even if you can legally call me, I am now not interested.

Second of all, DON'T CALL ME UP AND PUT ME ON HOLD!!!!!

I hate it when machines call me at any time. I know the reason why they do it, to cut down on the number of people they have to pay, which only makes it worse.

The past week, I've been getting a call from a machine during the day, which leaves a message on my VM (because I turn my phone down so I don't have it wake me up while I'm sleeping). The message apparently starts out before the VM system starts recording. I get "please delete this message, as it does not apply to you...." and continues on with a phone number to call. I delete the message, because they say it doesn't apply to me...

Eventually, a real person will call me, and we'll talk.

The only time I get those messages is when its for someone who isn't me or my doctors office. But my doctors office has the decency to have its automated message say "this is a message from Your Doctors Office with a.. [whatever]"

I don't understand why anybody would hold for the message

One time I did hold long enough just to reach an actual person to say "I have an important message for YOU....unless you want me to find out who you are and when you sleep, don't ever fucking call me again!"

Blame it on me being woken up by the phone. I no longer answer any phone calls during my sleep anymore, unless the phone will not stop ringing, because then I assume it's an emergency.

I love the fact that if you hold for an live person to pick up, they almost never know who YOU are... every one I've tested was a cold call trying to get me to buy that stupid auto repair insurance, though they had no idea what cars I owned.

The only other callers were those trying to convince me that there was something wrong with my credit account, and if I would just give them the number off of my card (do I have a Visa or Mastercard?) they would clear it up right away. Yeah, riiiiiiiiiiight. More likely they'd clear it out!

The only time I've ever held for them I've gotten a bill collector. Like I want to talk to them.

this is the one thing that has bugged the crap outta me for at least 20 years. even back 20 years ago phone that had voice mail/answering machine capabilities (even if it was on a cassette tape) were kinda common.

we used to get the same kind of calls even back then. phone rings (set to 4 rings) and VM comes on with our 15 second greeting:

.......... is your reference number. please call this number 1-800=666=6666. you must call this number NOW.

                  or

......... this call is only for the person mentioned at the beginning of this message. if you are NOT this person please do not listen any further to this message as this is a violation of the law. (yeah right. well you ARE calling my phone number and I DO have the right to listen to this message and want to find out who the FRACK is calling me)

I had one message that droned on and on and on and on till it took up a 30 minute cassette tape.
even in this day and age with almost EVERYONE having VM in one shape or form, my GF's land line still gets calls like this all the time.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

I think that's deliberate - get some of the more paranoid or gullible to call in fear that they've missed something terribly important.

Maybe I'm sucky, but I figure if the company can't be bothered to get a real person to call me, I can't be bothered to call them back.

I like to think that I'm helping ensure all of you who work in call centers aren't replaced by machines.

Maybe we should get some machines that will return the calls from their machines.
