......... this call is only for the person mentioned at the beginning of this message. if you are NOT this person please do not listen any further to this message as this is a violation of the law. (yeah right. well you ARE calling my phone number and I DO have the right to listen to this message and want to find out who the FRACK is calling me)
None of the machines I ever owned would even let you clear the message until you've played it at least once.

I had one message that droned on and on and on and on till it took up a 30 minute cassette tape.
The one I have now is digital, and cuts you off after one minute. It's cut quite a few of those damned political robocalls off.

Maybe I'm sucky, but I figure if the company can't be bothered to get a real person to call me, I can't be bothered to call them back.
I'm the same way, or if they can't be bothered to give me some clue as to why they're calling. I was getting messages on my machine for a couple months last fall, asking me to call some number for some "important matter" having to do with my son. They identified both me and him by name, so apparently they had some info, but they wouldn't say who they were or why they were calling. I've had ones like that in the past where they made it sound like something important, and when I called back they tried to sell me a bunch of crap. I knew this one wasn't the school or the doctor, because they would have identified themselves as such, and I know what number would have appeared on the box. So I figured it couldn't have been that important. Around last December the calls finally stopped.

I get the same calls. Monday through Friday, between 8am and 930am, though really only a couple days a week... some 866 number calling about "an important message. please call us back at 866-whatever immediately as we have important information for you" etc.

I agree with EvilEmpryss. If they can't bother to have a live rep call me (even a major CC company will call you with a live rep after a few failed auto-calls), no way in hell I'm calling a number that obviously has fees attached to it.

In the US, 866 numbers are toll free, as are 800, 877 and 888.

The only time I get those messages is when its for someone who isn't me or my doctors office. But my doctors office has the decency to have its automated message say "this is a message from Your Doctors Office with a.. [whatever]"
my mother and sister get 'important messages from their doctor' that tell them to call a messageing service with a patient number all the time. They then call the doctors office (because they have no idea if they have a number or not) and find out... the doctor has no idea what they are talking about every thing is quo.... but it is there messaging service that calls them.

my thing is with people calling me who dont know how to say my name. If i actually work with the company i always explain how to pronounce my last name and ask that it be documented as its for my comfort and security.
If i get a call that even mispronounce my first name, which is so common its a movie, no way am i calling you. Which sucks for some companies because there's one ive dealt with over a year now every time i talk to them i say 'yea my last name isnt Udd (for sake of arguement) its Aud. Please not i wont respond to Udd and make sure everyone knows'

They dont know. Why does no one know?

The message apparently starts out before the VM system starts recording. I get "please delete this message, as it does not apply to you...." and continues on with a phone number to call. I delete the message, because they say it doesn't apply to me...
I recognize that line. It's showed up in messages that a debt collector was leaving. Fortunately my VM message is short, so I got the name. Not me. Never been me. And I've had this phone since 2004. :/

Yeah, I don't get so many robocalls on my cell, but the house phone still gets the occasional one. As soon as I hear a robotic voice speaking, I wait just long enough to see if it will identify who is calling us. Doctor's office? I wait, probably something important for my mother. The bank? I wait. Anyone I don't recognize? Instant *click.*

Hell, I once got put on hold by someone calling the wholesale club. The second they did that, I hung up on them. Because fuck you, we have enough business as it is that we don't need to wait to take your call.
