I'd have said something. But then, my experiences with grocery stores have been...unique. Yes, we'll leave it at that.

Speaking of which...I have to finish writing down all the shit that went down today. I'm a feking idiot for even stepping out of the house today!!
    Lupo's new adventure!

    epic douchecanoe.
    *giggles madly*

he was just that ^; if you need it, show a bit of courtesy and step out of line if you're alone or simply get the item at another time. if you have someone with you, have one of you stay and the other fetch the item you sooo badly need.

I pushed my cart to the checkout. At this store, the checker actually has two belts and can check out a second person while the first person finishes bagging, paying, etc. Very convenient.
this sounds like winco! i heart winco...but i do not heart the idiots it attracts. around here, it's the type of place where you don't go for a few items; it's usually too busy (2 am is a whole other shopping experience, let me tell you! ^_^). you said that he only had a few...idiot. and the fact that he left to go get something else...if i were the checker, i woulda canceled is order and made him stand in line all over again.

I see this happen sometimes at the wholesale club. If someone leaves their cart in my line to go continue shopping, I'll push it aside and call the next customer forward. If they parked their cart and unloaded their stuff on the belt, then had to go get in line at customer service to get an actual membership card/one-day pass, then it depends on how quickly they'll be gone. If they're almost done at the desk, I'll wait. If they're sixth in line and there's only one person manning customer service... well, you just lost your space.

Its possible he grabbed the wrong item because something that looks similar was where the item is suppose to be. I fell into that trap because I was foolish enough to believe the cilantro would be under the big sign for cilantro.
Possible, but nevertheless, if you're not finished shopping, get the hell out of line. Not our fault, so it shouldn't be our penalty. To make others wait to avoid your own delay is pretty bloody selfish. Kind of like people who are in the wrong lane in traffic, then stop and hold up the lane they're in so they can get into the proper lane. You are in a right turn lane - turn right and circle around. Don't make everyone else wait instead.

That guy was an epic douchecanoe.

Who the frack do these people think they are that the rest of us should just wait? Ugh, I really hate people.

We have all probably forgotten something, but I know that I personally only run back if the item is very close, AND there isn't anyone behind me. Otherwise, I will just go back later. I hate that people have no consideration for others.

You see, I get irritated with that at my job as well. I don't really have a formal line or anything but I operate the "outta sight, outta mind" rule. I HATE it when people come by and dump their stuff off and are peeved when they get back and it's not finished. You're essentially stepping out of line. If you had waited for me to complete my service like these other people are doing it would have been done. I'm not going quicker because you're not there. In fact I'm taking the people who came after you because YOU'RE NOT HERE TO SUPPORT/DEFEND my position when people complain I'm making them wait while I change batteries for a person who isn't in front of them.

    The Passive-Aggressive game is fun.

My favourite way to deal with someone being passive-aggressive like that is to cheerfully thank them. If I'm feeling really with it, I'll make a comment about I appreciate them being considerate. The extra comment doesn't have a great success record, but I do a really good job of being oblivious to them being a jackass, because if they're subtle about it odds are that I AM oblivious to it.

I probably would have had as much difficulty myself holding my tongue in that situation.... it is beyond ballsy to expect a placeholder and your own dedicated checkout lane before you even finish shopping! At least the cashier hadn't already started ringing.... where I used to work, you needed a manager's approval to suspend orders, and it would take longer for them to bother to show up than it would for the guy to wander the aisles and come back with 10 products.
I think I'd have turned to the guy and said, ever so sweetly and kindly, "Well, just so you know, around here it's customary to do your shopping and THEN find a checkout line to get into, not to attempt to reserve one before shopping and expect it to be held open for you" then given him such a big smile and walked off.

It probably wasn't worth the potential argument. But I HATE it when people do that! Shopper+cart=complete unit. You (meaning the general 'you') don't park the cart at the register and go off somewhere else. If you need to go get something else, you're not finished shopping yet. Everybody else's time is worth just as much as yours. Etc, rant rant!

It wouldn't change his attitude or behaviourat all - so the only thing you'd get out of it would be the self-satisfaction of telling him off; at that point, it's really up to you whether it's worth possibly starting a longer argument or not.
I suppose that's my rationalization, too. I can't imagine him responding to my tonguelashing with a surprised blink and an "I'm so sorry - I didn't realize I was being such an ass! I shall endeavor to improve my behavior in the future."
What I REALLY wanted to do was smack him wordlessly upside the head.
