They were in one of the children's aisles, near a display of those metal boards kids can use them on. I still have that one floating around and I must admit even I was shocked they were so darned powerful.
    Really?? What store??

All the ones I've seen have been weak. Like, WEAK!! Nothing nefarious to be done with them.

I'm also surprised they didn't use a stainless steel with low magnetic response. I'm seriously shocked about that one.

My friend broke her wrist while rollerblading and they inserted plates under her skin in her wrist, they had NO magnetic response. Try as I did, I could not get a magnet to stick to her.

If you have a C Diff infection under your cast (which is what it sounds like from the description of the smell), you should be back at the doctor, not wandering around toyshops ! Antibiotics won't clear it on its own, necessarily, and if it smells, it isn't being treated efficiently. Seriously, you might want to think abouit going back to your doc.

Late to the party as usual...not to mention chock-full of cough medicine...but did I read the OP correctly or were you thinking of putting down floors with a hand injury like that? Last time I tried to do flooring, healthy and cold sober, I mucked it up with a breathtaking beauty...so best of luck to you!!

That's what I read it as. I would like to see some pictures of the cast-I'll bet that the doctors had to use some pretty extensive stitching to help heal the wounds. Dog bites fierce enough to break a bone aren't usually small affairs, and there would probably have to be some severe punctures, and tearing of muscles and skin. Whose dog was it? If it wasn't yours, are you going to press charges against the owner? Was it leased or running around loose? Is there a news article that you could link to that might give us some backstory? (Hopefully with a picture of your handsome mug, for all of the ladies out there! )

On a related note, this reminds me of an episode of House. (Severen, I'll bet you know the one. ) It was the episode in the first season, where Dr. House is giving the lecture to the med students. One of the examples that he talks about was bitten by a dog, and the wounds smelt...well...south of cheese, shall we say. Turns out that the farmer was inflected by the bacteria that cause flesh-eating disease, and he had to get his leg amputated.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Wow you sure have some luck Rep. A dog bites you hard enough to break your forearm? Damn did they have to put plates in too, in order to keep the bones stable, or was it more like a fracture? But animal bites can be really scary. I got bitten by a cat this summer, went right to bone. The joints still don't work right. Problem with bites like that is that the infection can go to the blood and effect your heart. I sure hope your doctor is paying close attention. Because it sounds like you have one hell of an infection, if it smells that bad.

My co-worker's brother is a diabetic and a couple of his toes went gangrenous. Smelly agonizing afair. He was running a fever too because that is what happens with that kind of rampent bacteria. He was eventually just begging the doctor to cut his toes off. I hope it doesn't come to that for you. It would be hard for you to type you amazing stories and we'd all be the less entranced by them.

i'm going to have to agree with barefootgirl on this. even if you have seen a doctor already go in for a second opinion from another doctor. if someone walking by, even with a sensitive nose can smell your wound that is dangerous.

It's the first episode that I ever saw, and it's still my favorite!

Dr. House may be a royal terror at the day clinic, but if I have some obscure cross of polio and elephantitis, I want him right by my bed.

Y'all are gonna scare him to death over here!

I'm not a doctor, but small anecdote from the other side of how fast bad smelling wounds will kill you... (and if you didn't realize that this was gonna be a very potential TMI, it's pretty TMIish and otherwise not for the squeamish.)

A while back, my fiance got really, really bad ingrown toenails of dooooom. The nail cut into the skin on both of them so bad that when it was growing, they bled constantly and got very, very infected. He'd clean the wounds daily, which was probably agonizingly painful, but there wasn't much else we could do. We had no medical insurance, and we certainly didn't have the money to go have a doctor treat him. Anyway, when it was at its worst, I could smell the wounds whenever he took his shoes off. I have a pretty sensative nose, but it was a strong smell. Dogs were perpetually obsessed with his feet.

He never got medical treatment for it. The problem eventually cleared up on its own somehow or another, and no death from blood poisoning. So it's very possible for a wound to reek and not be life-threatening.

That having been said, as I mentioned before, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, nor should anyone take the advice of some shmuck they met over the internet.

I'm back, sans cast. Got tired of it itching. I've still got it around in case it starts to hurt, but uh..don't tell my doc I'm shirking on it. I've still several weeks to go before I'm supposed to have it off all the time.

That said, I've got something of an update.

Went to the doc when the smell got REALLY bad. He pulled out a lancet and lanced the swellings and wounds and drained them. He thought, and said as much to me, that something may have gotten inside the wounds which rotted and became infected. So, after a good bit of painful cleaning on his part, and grunting on mine; he prescribed this triple antibiotic cream for me; and ordered me to step up the cleanings. This time with alcohol.

My hand is still very weak, and I can't lift things over a few ounces without it throbbing; but other than that, I'm fine.

                            Glad you're doing better!

Back in the day when I broke my arm, I remember being disappointed that I didn't get a plaster cast. Instead, I got surgery (complete with metal plates) and a cotton cast, which was difficult to sign on.

And, no, magnets do not stick to my arm (I've already tried )

On a vaguely related subject-- recently my DM showed up to help move some games around. I got a bit worried when I noticed he had packing tape around a couple of fingers.

"Yeah, I broke a finger a few days ago. Didn't want to go to the hospital, wait four hours, and pay $$$$$ just to have them put it in a splint."

The sad part is, having done that once (workmans comp experience, first time I ever broke a bone), I agree with him. By the time the hospital got around to doing anything, the pain had subsided.

It's not like they can do a lot for some broken stuff like fingers and ribs anyways, other than say, "yep, it's broken all right."

I've been fortunate, I've only ever broken my wrist, and that sucked because it was my left one, I'm left handed, and I was taking a very note-intensive course at the time. I did learn how to write with my right hand well enough that it was almost legible....
