Yes, actions like this can help dissuade creeps like this. But just like locks on doors, they're a response to criminal/antisocial behaviour.

I agree. And it's a miserable thing to have to consider. But in my experience, the only thing that can keep a predator like this away is the presence of another male. The predator isn't an Alpha, even though he has the desire to be so, therefore he picks on the person he perceives as being weaker. If there's another male nearby, especially one that has a claim on the targeted person, then the predator usually backs off.

It's simply a method of avoiding conflict without getting anyone in trouble. I used to use it when I was bartending, clubbing, and a candykid. Frequently the bouncers would just toss anyone involved in trouble, whether or not they were the victim. By having a group Alpha (male or female, but male worked better) we were assured safety from the assholes who liked to prey on party kids.
