I'm with Whiskey on this one. I've had my last name forever, why would I want to change it just because I got married? I mean I might hyphenate my last name but that would be it. And if I ever have kids they're taking my name. 'Cause I'm all matrilinial like that.
Me to a friend: I know I'm crazy, you know I'm crazy, the zombies at the end of the world will know I'm crazy. Thus not eating my brain for fear of ingesting the crazy. It's my survival plan.

Good lord, I thought I had a doozy in my first post. I stopped by the library today after work to get my info updated and had the following exchange.

      Me:
Library Person: Prolly needs some sort of icon, huh?

Me: Hi, I'd like to update my records. I've changed my last name.
LP: *sighs as if it's the biggest and most inconvienent thing to do in the world* Okay, do you have documentation?
Me: I have my updated license. It's--
LP: If the address isn't correct, I can't take it.
Me: *breathes, because I hate hate hate people who cut me off* The address is still the same, I just updated my last name *hands over license*
LP: And your phone number, has it changed too?
Me: I..just changed my last name. I haven't moved and my phone number is still the same.
LP: Well, I can't take this if you've moved, and if you have a different number. I have to have something with the current address.
Me: *breathes again* Is there someone in charge I can talk to?
LP: Yeah, but they're just gonna tell you the same thing. *walks off to get PIC*

I explain to PIC what I need done. She takes my license and library card, looks up my info, taps a few keys, clicks the mouse a few times and hands me my cards back telling me "all done!" and proceeds to give LP a glare. I thank her and ask the status of some items waiting on hold. LP gives me that oh so patented and trademarked cat-butt face and goes off to shelve some books.

So tell me, why is it so hard for people to listen? Honestly.
      Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
      DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

Because they're no smarter when they're on the other side of the counter?

But honestly, that level of "not a clue" has to be deliberate. Either not wanting to do the work, or objecting to you changing your name for some other reason.

Despite being Miss MaidenName for 20+ years before getting married, I still wanted to take Hubby's last name. I also really liked my middle name (got it from both grandmas), so I went from First Middle Maiden on most documents to First Middle Married. I still use my maiden name for artwork, since I've been doing that since before I got married, but luckily it's a bit easier to back up than a pseudonym since I still have the marriage and birth certificates that show my maiden name.

And then there's the one non-driver ID I have that shows both to handle right-after-marriage confusion with various places around town that had me on record with one name but would have to deal with checks and a credit card that had the other name. Not to mention my drivers license that I'd just barely renewed before the name-change.

I told the husband-to-be that if my father's name was good enough for me for the first 21 years of my life, then it was good for the next 21 years of my life. The only things that have his last name attached to my first name are our joint checking account that says First name Maiden name Last name on it, and bankruptcy papers from wayyyyyy long ago that have me as an also-known-as. Our children have his last name, but I just couldn't swallow it. The DMV, Social Security office and the IRS all have me with my maiden name.

My mom also told me that if I didn't change my name, it would be easier if we ever got divorced (at the time she gave me six months at best). It's been 16 years... ack... I hate paperwork though, so it's all good.
