No, after I made the topic, I thought it looked that way too.

My hotel had a conference center/ball rooms. During one music performance, the band used smoke machines. There's different types, I guess some of the smoke/fog machines use water vapor, some use chemicals. Well, they were using a chemical one and it set-off the hotel alarms! They got in deeeeepppp trouble afterwards because the use of smoke machines WAS NOT in their agreement, and actually has to be approved by the events manager for just that reason!

Well, if those people really don't want to evacuate, they're doing the gene pool a favor, right?

In a logical world (ie, one where people in charge know that some folks won't believe a fire until their feet are hot), no.

    In the real world? Probably.

That said, I would recommend the staff take note of people trapped through no fault of their own (disability, fire in both their exit routes), and GET THE HELL OUT. Then tell the firefighters/rescue people of the trapped people.

Save as many people as possible, leave it to the professionals to save the trapped people, and let Darwin take his own.

Or take pity on the firefighters and cleanup crews and tell them of the idiots as well. It's tough on the emergency services to find bodies.

    Poor Mr. He-bro.

How do evacuation policies work? Can employees every get in trouble if people don't evacuate even though they were told to?

    Hell, my store caught fire.

While the building was filling with smoke people were arguing with my waitstaff about the necessity of leaving the burning building.

I and one of my cooks came of of the kitchen (one of our electrical panels had caught fire, in a very meaningful way) carrying empty fire extinguishers (I caught a couple lungfuls of that, my phlegm was crunchy for a week) when I saw one last wait pleading with a male customer to leave the building, and he wasn't having any of it.

I think he was telling her to get it taken care of, but he was eating.

I told her, "Get yourself out of here, the fire department will be here soon, everybody else is out," I jerked a thumb at the customer, "If this stupid bastard wants to burn up with the rest of the building that's fine."

He stood up to protest, when he spotted the fire trucks. His expression went from indignant to puzzled.

"This place really is on fire?"

I looked at him, hard. "Smoke?" I shook a fire extinguisher in his face. "Fire extinguishers? Is any of this ringing a bell?"

"Well I thought you were just playing around!"

Another hard look, then I grabbed his arm and started dragging him out. "Just playing around! Jesus, you really are a stupid bastard, aren't you."

He tried complaining about me to the fire department. They told him he was a stupid bastard, too.

We had a mandatory test of the fire alarm at work (happens every few months, the alarm rings for about ten seconds to check it still works). I was on the phone with a customer who complained he could hear the alarm while he was talking to me (I could only just hear it down the corridor myself so it must have been very faint down the headphones)

People are so bizarre. I was staying at a hotel once for a convention. Their fire alarm kept going off one evening. The con people were getting pissed because the hotel first couldn't tell them why and then because they couldn't stop it from going off. I heard no less than five different stories, all claiming fire and/or smoke had been seen at different places in the hotel. People kept going outside, then coming back in.

The next day we finally found out that it was a new alarm system and it had a couple of glitches, there never was any fire.

Natural Selection at my brother's hotel

This was told to me by him. It happened last night at his hotel. His hotel had a fire alarm. He had this conversation many many times.

SC: Is that a real fire alarm?
    Him: I don't know yet.
SC: Well what should we do?
Him: I would strongly recommend that you evacuate.

Very few people did. Out of the few that evacuated, there were guests that used the elevator.

One SC got mad at my brother for not turning off the alarm.

SCto my brother) Don't you know how to shut this thing off?
Fire Department: (who was just behind the SC) We do.

Turns out it was a false alarm. Had it been a real fire, many people would have perished.
