  • not bait and switch...

    but still pretty damned sleezy.

I'm staying in Vegas for my honeymoon and I can't afford the minimum bets at my resort or the ones close by, so when I saw an ad for the Sahara saying they did $1 blackjack I hopped the first SDX out there and come in to find that there was only one table that does $1 blackjack and that dealer was on break and there was already a waiting list already for once they got back. All the other tables were in the $5 to $10 range, which I'm sorry there is no way that I (or probably anyone else in their right mind) would travel from the south side of the strip to the Sahara for a $5-$10 blackjack. I asked one of the dealers at an open table if there was any possibility of them honoring the lower minimum bet since that table was closed and of course, nope won't do it, but will gladly let me play at the higher rate.

While this may be a management thing, whenever we've gone out to Wendover, if there is no space at a lower limit table and there is space at a higher limit table, the dealers are normally willing to let you play at the lower limit there until a spot opens at the lower limit table. Hence why I feel no guilt with just walking out and deciding that I would probably never return to the Sahara.

Sounds like bad managment to me. And what is this you say about a table being closed if a dealer is on break? That... doesn't happen. When a dealer goes on break, it's because another dealer has "tapped on" to that game, and will continue to deal the table until the first person returns.

Now, if a casino advertises $1 tables, and then does not actually _have_ said tables available for play at all times, then you're probably right in calling it bait-and-switch. Around here, the casino I work at never has carnival games (3-Card Poker, 4-Card Poker, Caribbean Stud, Let It Ride, Mississippi Stud) that go below $10, and Blackjack is never below $15. I'm not sure how the other place in town does their minimums, but I know they advertise $5 tables, even if they only have 1-2 tables with that limit on their property.

Another thing, and they may do it differently in Vegas, but for us, what's posted on the table is the limit, no ifs ands or buts. Which means, for example, if you're in on a Friday afternoon, playing on a $25 table, and we get a big rush of people such that the Pit Boss decides the table will be going up to $50, you can't just keep playing $25. I'm not sure if that's just company policy, or if it's a state law (we have funky laws regarding 'Gaming' here in my state), but that's how it is.
    Dealer hits... 21. Table loses.

This happens more often than most people want to believe.

Circus Circus is pretty good for low bets... but I'm really disappointed with the gambling here. In Wendover it is all about people having fun, in Vegas almost everyone has been really uptight about the game.

Hoopla was probably pretty stressful. Utah is not kind to lads who prefer lads. (or ladies who prefer ladies)
But yes. Where are the juicy details? The pictures? *puppy eyes*

I'm not a gambler, but weather wise from what I hear the fall is the best time to go to Vegas. Congrats on your marriage,Smiley!

Back on topic, it does sound a bit dodgy that their cheapest table was closed, when normally they're manned on a hot-seat system. I wouldn't like to gamble somewhere that pulls things like that, as you're probably even less likely than normal to win anything.

Sorry the casino pulled that garbage on you -- I agree with the others, you definitely got bait-&-switched.

Hate to say this but they probably have orders from on high not to open those tables. Their jobs are more important to them than your inconvenience. All you can do is complain or walk away. Just saying.

Circus Circus in Reno has $1 single deck tables, which is the only way I'll play blackjack

Vegas is hurting in the bad economy . . . I'll bet that has something to do with it.

Long time lurker here. I had to explain part of why the Sahara did this... They are closing on May 15th. At this point they don't care anymore.

As someone that travels to Vegas every week for work I can say that there are many very nice off strip casinos that will take good care of the customers that walk in the door.
