This was a few years ago at a restaurant I'll call um, Pepper's. I was having lunch with my mom and brother while we were running a few errands (I was still single, hanging with my mom beat mopping the kitchen, what can I say?). When we ordered, my mom asked for her burger medium. The waitress told her that the chef made medium burgers pretty pink so she might want to get medium well. My mom thanked her, did so, and all was well. Our meals were brought out by someone else-i forget the term (enlighten me if you will anyone) but at restaurants like these its not your waitress who has your food. She set my mom's down first and she was hungry so she took a bite-and it was frozen in the middle. Server (is that it?) apologizes and takes it back. Waitress apologizes, says it'll only be a few minutes. Mom tells my brother and me to eat so we do. 20 minutes later we are mostly done and my mom's food is still MIA. My mom is not a pushover but she is a nice, polite southern lady. She flags the waitress down and tells her (much more nicely than I would have) that she has some things to do and needs to leave and since we are finished she would prefer that they remove the burger from her bill and we will just leave. Waitress says...."uh huh", leans down sso she is nearly nose to nose with my mom and says "I'm sorry you didn't listen but I tried telling you how we cook our burgers and we don't refund for deafness." AND...WALKED...OFF. I saw more red than I imagine is in the deepest pits of Hell. The manager comped everything but my mother insisted on paying for mine and my brother's meals since we ate them. I still to this day cannot imagine what her problem was. Obviously no one told her what was wrong with the burger-it wasn't rare, it was still alive-but that is no excuse.

Pink =/= frozen! And on another note, how does following the server's suggestion (ordering med-well) become "not listening"? And deafness??? RUDE!!! Methinks she didn't last long in that establishment after that!

And the term you're looking for is runner, I believe. It's been a few years since I worked in a restaurant.

OMG, I would have been FLABBERGAHSTED at that!!! Your mom took the waitress's advice and the food was poorly prepared; not your mom's fault at-all! I would have given that waitress a SERIOUS dressing-down after regaining the power of speech! Not only rude, but insulting to those actually hard-of-hearing.

rude, bordering on abusive; what does she think her job is, anyway?? that should go to management and corporate; an employee with no customer skills has no business serving customers (or being anywhere near them, period). just a big wtf right there.

im getting to the age now where i would have stood up and loudly (very loudly) said GET ME A MANAGER NOW.

not only was she wrong because your mother did listen to her advice but she was damned rude

Too bad it wasn't their "tropical" competitor -- I know where their corp HQ is, right across the parking lot from me. I could hand-carry your complaint in to them.

And as to "peppers?" I've never gotten bad service there, I hope your experience is an isolated one. (One I would have yelled loudly for the manager over!)

My mother (God rest her) would've taken that waitress's head off...and if she didn't, my father would, if he was with us. She was WAY beyond rude, and I really hope she didn't last long there!

I don't go to either of the "Pepper's" locations near me. Why? Because every time I have gone, the service has been UNBELIEVABLY slow.

How slow? Friend and I went in for a late lunch/early dinner. We were in the place for close to 90 minutes. How many times did we see the waiter? 3. Once for drinks, once when he brought drinks and took order, and once when he dropped off the check. Oh, and there were only 2 other people in the dining room, so I know he wasn't busy serving them. They were keeping the bartender busy by ordering tons of drinks though, according to them they'd been there for more than 6 hours, tying up a table and downing drinks.

Oh, I would have been beyond pissed if that had happened to me. Hell, I'm angry right now just at reading it! I hope the manager sacked her after that.

Some people should not be working around the public.

She'd better wise up before she says the wrong thing to the wrong person one day.

That reminds me of an experience I had with my parents at "Butters' favorite restaurant" we got seated right away but got our drinks 10 minutes later, when the waitress came back to take our order she didn't write anything down because she "had a good memory". Almost a half hour later she came back with her order pad in her hand and said "I'm sorry, what did you order again?" We were pissed we paid for our drinks and left, but not before dad flagged down a manager to tell him what happened.
