As far as I know, I'm not allergic to anything, but I have chemical sensitivities. insect bites, make me swell up a ton, medication works way too well, and perfumes (cologne included) and cigarette smoke make it neigh impossible to breathe. Am I the only one with this problem?

I have to say one of the most interesting flavor combinations I've had is macaroni and cheese made with vanilla soy milk...

I'm lactose intolerant. I can have some cheese, butter, ice cream, sour cream in small quantities WITH my lactaid pills [occasionally, I have tempted fate with cheese and no pills and only gotten a stomachache--but I don't like doing that. >.<]. I CANNOT have milk at all, cheesecake, or milkshakes. One sip of a milkshake made me extremely sick for over an hour. I've also actually gotten sick off buttered popcorn, which was new. I didn't have that much.

A big problem I have is that apparently, anything at a restaurant with any amount of dairy in it has like the supercharged dairy in it or something because I seem to get sick regardless. So I'm starting to get very tempted to ask them to please take any dairy off it instead of trying it and hoping for the best.

I'm also not allergic to tomatoes, but raw tomato makes me throw up. I hate the taste/texture that much. So...it might not technically be an allergy, but the effect is similar. I just ask them to take the tomatoes off, though, I don't claim an allergy. It's worked fine so far...I mostly seem to ask at Taco Bell because the way it's set up with the little chunks in things, it's a lot more difficult try and take out. A burger or something, I can just lift the bun and take the tomato slice off, no big deal [well, and wipe where it was with a napkin, so there's no tomato goo].

But yeah...I hate people who claim allergies when they just dislike it. Is there anything wrong, by the way, with simply saying, "Please no *x*, I hate it?"

Blas, have you tried rice milk? It tastes soooo much better than soy milk. I've been drinking it for so long now that cow's milk doesn't taste right to me any more. When I want milk, it's the taste of rice milk that I'm wanting.

I don't like onions on my sandwich, but I'll order onion rings. I'm still waiting for someone to point this out that I'm still getting onions.

Tollbaby, I've been told the same thing about my latex allergy and bananas, pineapples, avocado, chestnuts, kiwi fruit, mango, passionfruit, strawberries, and soy.

I eat a banana a day. Still around. I eat kiwi rarely, but I've had a lot of kiwi-strawberry stuff. Still here. I like strawberries. Still on the right side of the dirt.

I'm not that much of a fan of mangoes, passion fruit or avocado.

I suspect I have more of the contact dermatitis than the severe type, though it's a pain when I do get it because I itch all over! Just thinking about it is making me itch a little. gah!
          Random conversation:
Me: Okay..so I think I get why Zoro wears a bandana
          DDD: Cuz it's cool

So, by using the Doctor's reasoning, bow ties, fezzes and bandanas are cool.

My cousin is one of those who can not eat tomatoes at all, but can pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, etc by the gallon and be ok. He stopped eating katsup when I told him it had tomato in it though .

My mom is lactose intolerant, but for some reason only with white milk (skim..1%, 2%, Whole..etc) Cheese, ice cream, chocolate milk, etc she has no issue with One of her favorite foods is Pizza (with loads of cheese). Yet she drinks even a little milk, and can get very sick. She can also eat things like mac and cheese. If somebody has an explanation for that..

            Sometimes allergies are strange.

Also..I don't like tomatoes..but love ketchup, pizza sauce, etc. I don't like onions except onion rings OR on white castle sandwiches . Love fresh crisp lettuce on a grilled hamburger, but not on a fried hamburger. I iz odd..

Lactose intolerance (which is different from a dairy allergy) affects those who have it differently. I'm much the same as your mom, I can't drink milk or use it on my cereal, I use rice milk for that, but I CAN eat processed dairy (cheeses, yogurt, and ice cream) and even foods cooked or baked with milk. I can even eat whipped cream and use half and half in my coffee and tea (however, those are small amounts, if I ate a LOT of whipped cream I'd get sick). Yogurt cultures destroy the lactose in the milk, so anyone who is lactose intolerant can eat yogurt. With cheeses, the older, more aged cheeses tend to have less lactose, so those usually affect less, while the younger cheeses tend to have more, so those affect more. Depending on the ice cream, it may be made from a cooked custard, cooking breaks down the dairy's proteins and sugars to a degree. Many "ice creams" if you look at the label closely are actually a "frozen dairy dessert" because they don't contain the requisite amount of dairy or dairy fat. So those may be less likely to bother. Personally, over the years, I've learned how much of different things I can eat without having a problem, so I no longer let myself eat as much cheese or ice cream loaded or whipped cream as I might like so as to avoid discomfort.

I tend to have issues with cleaning chemicals and some perfume bases and medications either work either not at all or only barely, or they work really well.

I have enough of an issue that I get bloated and gassy if I drink milk (it took going without cereal a few days in a row to make me realize that the half-cup that I had with my Raisin Bran was what was making me feel so awful a couple of hours later.

                Homogenization.

When they homogenize milk, it breaks down the casein into molecules small enough to be absorbed by the intestinal tract. Whole raw milk doesn't have the same issue, as the molecules will pass through a human's digestive tract and out the other end.

I can't drink milk and be comfortable, but most other forms of dairy, made with pasteurized but not homogenized milk, doesn't give me any problems. I'm still pissed that big dairy killed off the raw milk industry.

I may look into rice milk for cereal, though, as I eat rice cereal most of the time as it is.

Mytical - read the ingredients list on that chocolate milk (unless it's a mix, in which case I have no idea)...Some of the pre-made chocomilk drinks (nee Choco-Charm) don't actually *contain* milk at all, and the bulk of those that do are composed predominantly of HFCS (with Nestle's Quik being an exception, much to my surprise).

Oh, yeah, this reminds me of a study that was being done on those with peanut allergies that found that most of the people in their study had been given soy-based formula as babies.

A more recent study suggests that these findings were flawed, but checking the methodology of the new study, it was also flawed.

I suspect that it is not soy, itself, but modified soy, as well as other modified foodstuffs that are likely leading to higher allergy rates. Most authorities on the subject currently suggest that unless necessary, that babies not be introduced to outside food sources until at least 6 months, and to start with very basic items, adding them one at a time to gauge acceptability and reaction. Also, those who are pregnant or breast-feeding should monitor their own food intake.

Sometimes if it's something that it'd normally belong on, people either just put it on anyway or they think you are weird. Like I hate cheese on a cheesesteak. I just put ketchup on it. When I get for just a plain steak sandwich, I get confused looks like it doesn't make sense. I don't like cheese on meat, it doesn't make sense to me. Sometimes I just say I'm lactose intolerant so people shut up about it. I feel like I'm going to have to tell people I'm allergic to vegetables when people ask me about salad.

I wouldn't bother with any of that. If they've got a problem with me getting a hotdog with nothing but relish and a little bit of ketchup, that's their problem.

Judging from both the parenting book I read while pregnant with my first and the advice from our pediatrician (who is awesome), this sounds about right. Both recommended waiting until 4-6 months to introduce rice cereal (since it's the least allergenic of the baby cereals), and not introducing anything else until the 6-month mark, except simple things like unsweetened rice krispies or unsweetened, unflavored rice cakes. At the 6-month mark, you can start introducing other baby food items one at a time, waiting a couple of days between each new item to check for allergic reactions. So far, with two kids, we've found that while one is super-picky about what she eats, neither has any allergies to speak of whatsoever.

Oh, and when you're introducing the new foods, start with green vegetables, then other vegetables, then fruits, so baby doesn't get used to the really sweet stuff and outright refuse the bland peas and beans.
