So far, I have yet to be carded using my card, my mom's card, and even my bf's card. Granted, the only places I use my bf's card at are the places that know us both by faces and by our IDs, since we go in there all time. But I used my mom's card once to get my prom dress and other pretty prom things that totaled to almost $500......didn't ask for ID. Even signed my name on the receipt. The clerk just put it with the other CC receipts without looking at my signature in anyway and let me go. That kind of worried me, so I told my mom about it, and ever since, when she slides her card, a little message pops up that tells the clerk to check ID and won't finish the transaction until my mom's birthday is typed in correctly. I can still legally use it, since I am of blood relation, have the same last name and same address on my ID, plus I know her birthday and last 4 digits of her SS by heart.
And with the signature thing on the back, my isn't signed (but am in the process of signing it now, tyvm) and I've been using it without any trouble since I got it in Sept. so i don't know how it works, but it might just go along the lines of most of the cashiers who don't check ID, don't check the back of the card for a signature either. It is all very bad, considering people commit fraud in this town likes it's the mob days all over again, which is to say, all the time.
Also, with the gift cards, NONE of the stores around here do gift cards from CC, just for that reason. I don't think they can really be tracked, unless they have a specific tracking number or serial number attached to them, but I have yet to work in retail or deal with gift cards in general, besides using them so I don't know
Just because they serve you, doesn't mean they like you. And just because they smile and act polite doesn't mean they aren't planning to destroy you.

It is against most merchant agreements to require ID. The card is supposed to be signed, but these days so many POS have the customer slide their own card, the cashier never even sees whether or not the card is signed, much less what the name on the card may be. And the machines will accept *anything* in the signature box!

Some stores don't even require a signature anymore if the amount is small enough.

Wegmans started it where I live where if it was $50 or less you didn't need to sign. I think they upped it to $75. The giant eagle store then followed suit at the $50 level.
My old pharmacy had a $50 floor before requiring a signature.

My current vet clinic does not require a signature at all. And I've had charges approaching $1000 there. But then, they do know me pretty well...
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

That's the way it is at the swamp. Customers swipe their own cards. The cashier never sees the card or the signature on it.

Wonder if anybody would notice if I signed "Penis McFartburger" (thanks whoever came up with that one) on the pinpad.

They shouldn't be doing that in the first place! The real world isn't Mayberry USA; you don't know everyone in town and can't trust them. I posted once (found it) about two idiot women at my son's preschool who left their purses in their cars when they went in to pick up their kids and came out to find the windows smashed and the purses gone.

I don't excuse or condone what those thieves did, but let's be blunt here. You DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES LYING AROUND. Period, end of sentence. Use some street smarts and common sense and you won't get burned.

I had to check to make sure you did not live near me, lol. At the daycare I worked at most parents would get their kid out, bring them in and leave quickly to go to work. Usually left the car running so they could get gone. There were some not so nice teenagers living in a house nearby that were watching to see which parents would leave their cars running and one day decided to sit out next to our building, wait for the parent to go in, steal the purse or whatever valuables were in the front seat (phone, gps, whatever could be grabbed) and run to their house with it. They got several peoples things, including mine. I had two kids, ages 1 and 2, so I would take both the kids in and then come back to get their stuff for their class and what I needed to bring to teach my class for the day. While I was taking the kids in they hit my car I usually left my purse behind the seat and took my "teacher bag" in so I did not even realize it until my lunch break that they got mine too. And most of the parents did not realize it until they stopped for coffee on the way to work or on their lunch break as well.

One of the girls finally got caught by a parent though and I am sure she regretted it. This lady was 6 foot tall or taller and very fit. She played womens baseball and she was a nice person but you did NOT mess with her or she would rip you a new one. She left the classroom and as soon as the girl was running away from her car she walked out our door. She chased her down and brought her in by her arm, kicking and fighting the whole time. The teenager was a tiny girl so she was fighting with her whole body and here is the mom holding her with one hand The mom yelled at our kitchen lady to get a phone and called the cops and told the girl if she wanted her ass kicked today she would try to run The cops got there and took the girl in. They never did find half the stuff they all took, including my stuff. I had to get all new SS cards and birth certificates for the kids because it so happened that the daycare needed a copy of them and I still had them in my purse and that was a major pain, not to mention all the other stuff in my purse. This was around 2 years ago and we all just went to the trial about it about a month ago. She ended up not having to pay any of us anything for some reason. It sucked but she did go to jail for a while and she is on probation for 5 years and has a no contact order with all of us.

I wish our store's computers start prompting to see ID on credit transactions over a certain amount again. They still do that for checks at least, but there's no prompt saying to check the signature during the credit process.

My sister has "Ask for ID" on the back of her card instead of her signature (her wallet was stolen once) she says that she never gets asked.
I worte SEE ID on the back of one of my cards once. About 50% of the cashiers never looked at the back of the card at all. About 25% looked at it but never asked me for ID and the last 25% looked and asked for ID. I made sure to thank the people who asked.

I never bothered to complain about the people who didn't...I wasn't concerned about security; I was just running a kind of experiment to see how many people would actually ask for my ID.

There was a post I read by a waitress. Long story short a 20 something girl eating alone left a very expensive Smartphone on an outdoor table adjacent to a busy sidewalk in a major tourist city when she went to the bathroom. Phone was gone when she got back (big surprise). Then she accused the waitress of stealing her phone. I believe the manager called the police for her and the police wound up having to "convince" the woman to leave the poor waitress alone and stop flinging baseless accusations around.

Just out of curiosity, for those workers who do check ID, if the signatures do not match, what do you do? If you are the person in charge, that is. Since the TOS does not allow you to require ID, how do you refuse the charge if the system okays it?

I had this happen to me only once, about 15 years ago. I was working registration at the college, and the PIC told me to go ahead and take it, and if the charge were challenged, they'd just put a hold on the student till the tuition was paid in some other manner. I have no idea what ever happened with that charge/student.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

a million years back when i was on checkout in a major aussie supermarket we were under strict orders to always check the signature matched the back of credit cards when receipts were signed.

key cards/debit cards aren't normally checked because theyre generally swiped by the owner.

theres a certain shop here in town that some of the girls on the register wont even acknowledge you in front of them while serving you.

i went in there one day and bought a few things. had to use my visa card for payment. i said hello and got a blank stare in return. she snatched my card of me to put it in the machine and just about threw it on the counter instead of the hand i was holding out in return.

not once had she looked at me during the whole transaction. when it came to signing the card i could see she didnt care so i signed the back Elvis Presley

                              :-)

You actually had 25% who asked?! I've had that written on the back of my card as an experiment since January. I've had TWO people ask. TWO.
