  • How About You Just Fix My Problem?

I didn't really know where to put this because it's tech support but I'm whining about the tech support person...so if it needs to be moved, mods, feel free.

So for the last three years I've been having tech issues with my laptop. Dell has REFUSED to fix it despite my warranty. I have been yelled at, talked down to, and degraded by their associates. Finally it got to the point that my Dad had to call them. He's actually on hold right now. He's got it on speaker so I've been able to listen to the whole thing.

This is the problem with my PC: The fans don't run. The boards get hot. It slows to a snail's pace. It shuts off. Eventually if you allow it to do this over and over again, it will shut off and then try to reboot in an endless loop forever and ever until you shut it off or it overheats again. It literally commits suicide.

The tech guy literally tried to run a diagnostics checklist on a PC that would run it super super super slow and then shut off in the middle and then he'd try to rerun it like this time it would be different. He tried to tell my Dad it was the internet connection. Nice try, but no. Every time he tried to tell my Dad something my father would shoot it down and I would hear this dejected "Oh..." I developed a sick and twisted love for that "Oh..." throughout their conversation.

Eventually my Dad told them (in his authoritative "you will listen to me and listen good" voice) "If you're going to try to run this diagnostics test on a computer that WON'T RUN, just SEND A TECH OUT HERE." Their diagnostics test had been restarted once and has been running for 50 minutes. I'm impressed the laptop can even run for that long but Dad's got it propped up on its side so airflow from the window directly hits the bottom of it.

Guy folded. My father was told that a tech would be coming to the house to replace:

    1. The power cord.
    2. The hard drive (again)
    3. The mother board.
    4. The cooling fan system.

If this doesn't work (or if they don't fix it), I'm buying an HP.

But this is my thought right now: AT LEAST SOMETHING IS HAPPENING. Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster if only for THIS. Good thing too, I've never seen my Dad so angry at a tech person...

Elapsed time of tech support: Approx. 2 Hours.

I've heard a lot of the same comments about Dell support. Thankfully, my Dell laptop is a work machine, so I don't have to deal with them directly.

Oddly enough, I was seeing the same thing for a while. IT came and went to work on it when I pointed out the CPU temp was consistently above 80 C. Turns out there was a lot of lint/dust/hair in the heat sink preventing the fan from doing any good. Not something a can of compressed air could fix.

They took it apart and it's been fine since. CPU temp as I type this is around 39 C.

When/if they can get it running again (or if you get another laptop), I recommend keeping a little program called SpeeFan running. It's great for monitoring system temps.

well, at least i know what type of compy not to buy, when i can afford to replace (and shove) this one (out of a window into traffic).

ah, nothing like 'great' customer support from techs who have no clue.
      look! it's ghengis khan!

Don't buy an Acer. They're just as bad.

Let me speak in favor of HP though. My PC & laptop are both HP and I love 'em! Dell, however...Not so much. Been there. had their machines & lack of customer service. Not going back. EVER. best of luck to you though!

I would not recommend Acer. While my Acer has actually been surprisingly good, even as a technically perfect machine it has design flaws. The fan is anemic, and more or less REQUIRES you buy a cooling pad to avoid it overheating and shutting down from normal use. And the battery has maybe an hour of life at best under minimal use. Brand new. Out of the box.

Granted, this machine is several years old.

My roomie used to WORK for Dell, and she's the first to tell people NOT to buy one. She knows the runaround they make the techs give people.

My HP has been fairly trouble-free. Though to be fair I've never had to deal with ANY of their tech support.

My last laptop purchase was a Toshiba. I've been very pleased with it. Three years and holding!

Ditto on this post. Mine is also a Toshiba and I have never had a single problem with it.

Acers are only good when they are actually working. Dells are awful, HPs are alright, and Asus is pretty decent.

tip for some companies (Dell was included last time I checked)
See if you can connect to their Spanish line - The techs are usually more experienced, and based in the US. It's great when the language barrier/scripting barrier is a problem

My dad turned my first laptop (Toshiba purchased in 2002) into a Linux box and it's still chugging along. A few issues, but if a 9-year-old lappy didn't have any problems I'd be wondering.

Every Dell I've ever dealt with has had serious issues. If I have to recommend an OEM I tell people to buy HP.

i'm still trying to understand how this 'tech' thought that the internet was interfering with fan operation and cooldown of the unit.

i'm a technotard and even i know better than that!

my desktop's a refurbished Dell, and I haven't had any problems with it... except occasional slowness; I also don't play games on it-- browsing the internet and streaming internet radio. I have more problems with my internet connection, but it's Clearwire/through the air, so weather can do stuff to it.
My netbook's a Dell too, but it has 1ghz of processing... so slow. But it works, and has lots of space. And most netbooks are like that.

You know, it's funny... Other than being a bit laggy(I'm gonna actually take my laptop in to get checked for viruses when I get the chance), and a Windows update causing it to do a KSOD, I've had relatively few problems with my Acer laptop... *Headscratch* I've had it for almost three years, too. As for it having bad battery life... That's only because I leave it plugged in, so that one's my own fault.

Y'know, I was planning to buy one of those Dell Inspiron Duo "convertibles" (netbook, screen flips over, then becomes a pad). It was out of stock when I went to pick it up. Now I don't think I'm going to buy it.

Don't even get me started with Dell. Just don't.

Best of luck to you with your problems with them. I hope they can be resolved.
