  • Dead Plant + No Receipt = Fail

    Been awhile since I had a retail Sighting.

    Went to the Orange Apron today to buy some mulch and river stones for a backyard project. While at the register checking out in the Garden section, a young man and woman came in with a small dead tree (potted) in a cart. They wanted to return the plant.

    First, they interrupted the cashier serving me (first fail).

    SM=Sucky Man
    SW=Sucky Woman
    C=Cashier

    SW: We want to return this plant.
    C: Yes, ma'am. Do you have your receipt.
    SW: No. We bought this six months ago
    C: We can't accept a return without a receipt. They're really getting firm about this.
    SM: But I thought you guys accepted returns for a year.
    C: We do, but not without a receipt. You can go over to the service desk, but I saw an anncoument there, no returns without a receipt.
    SW: That's ridiculous. No one told me that.
    C: It was printed on your receipt, ma'am
    SW: Well, we don't have it. I want to return this.
    C: You'll need to go to the service desk then. I can't do a return without a receipt. I have no way of knowing whether you actually bought that from us without one.
    SW: Ridiculous! I bought this here!
    C: But you don't have a receipt. You still need to go to the service desk. I can't do the return.

    They left, grumbling.

    Me: Now THAT'S the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard . . . wanting to return a dead plant with no receipt.
    C : welcome to my world.

    I hope you told the poor guy about this forum. Sounded like he might need a place to vent.

    We should really have business cards made up for this reason... Is there a template somewhere?

      Vistaprint has a small selection of free designs for business cards. You pay S+H, of course, but, what, five bucks isn't much for 100 business cards. ^_^

      Back OT, wtf? I bet she bought that plant at a cheapo store and wants to return it for more money than she spent.

        Last summer there was a customer at my store wanting her money back, because the plants she had bought from us the year before hadn't come up again that season.

          10-odd years ago, my Dad was at the Canadian Tire garden center, when a woman brought in a rosebush that was doing VERY poorly to return. Once her return was done, the cashier reached around and put it in the trash bin that was beside the register. My Dad asked if he could have it if they were just going to throw it out, and the cashier said to take it - it had maybe one green leaf on it. Dad nursed it back to health (he has a green thumb like nobody I know). Its still going strong

            I did, but it was getting crowded and he really couldn't talk. Hopefully he'll show up and tell some stories.

            How very cool. I don't have much of a green thumb at all, except with weeds

                    Wait....They've had the plant six months, killed it, and now want to return it?? And the only thing stopping them from doing this is the fact that they don't have a receipt? How is that possible? Generally I would think if you had a plant six months and then killed it, it's all on you. Granted I have the exact opposite of a green thumb

                        Normally, I couldn't agree more.

                        However, apparently the Orange Apron DOES have a return policy on plants of up to one year.

                        With a receipt.

                          Boy, do we. People will pull up their spring annuals, the ones that die off in the summer heat, and bring them back to us for a refund.

                          We had a LOT of plant returns when the ground thawed this year. Drought summer + deep freeze in winter = lots of dead shrubs. That's one of the big reasons they're suddenly cracking down. (Well, that and there's no cameras pointed at all the plants that just sit out in the open in the parking lot every night...)

                          My mom is one of those people who can nurse a plant back from nothing. I ordered her some columbine for Mother's Day this year, and of the three, one was dead deade and one was nearly there--but she's determined to nurse it back to health. Me, I've managed to kill a spider plant. But through trial and error, and a really helpful book on plant diseases, I'm slooooowly learning.
                          It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.
