Huh, 125 out of 200 in favor of my having Asperger's on that quiz.

A lot of those questions I was like "Doesn't everyone do that?"

Especially one about "Do people often tell you that you smile at innapropriate times." OMG, my boyfriend does that constantly! That is probably one of the main reasons we are still together after 5 years because everytime we fight he ends up smiling and then we can't take each other seriously so it's a lot easier to resolve.

Interesting, I scored a 161 out of 200 on that quiz. It's enough to make me want to seek a professional opinion. However, since I don't have insurance and no body parts are falling off, that will have to wait. It does explain a lot though.

I got 185 out of 200 on that quiz. Guess that clinches it; yet, I don't see the point of getting professionally diagnosed. It would be like going to someone to verify the fact that my eyes are blue.

Actually, in the People magazine article I read, there was a 50-year-old woman who didn't realize she was an Aspie until after both of her sons were diagnosed on the spectrum, and then the doctor asked her to be tested, since it's apparently somewhat hereditary.
You'd be amazed how often that happens! Parents bring their kids in to psychologists to find out why they're having trouble in school, get the diagnosis of {ADHD, learnign disability, autistic spectrum, whatever} and the full description, then say "Holy Hell, that was ME in school!". So they get evaluated themselves and about 75% of the time, Mom or Dad has the same thing as the kid.

I'm ADHD, and looking at my mother I can tell you EXACTLY where that came from

To those who are doing the online quizzes, do keep in mind that there are quite a few things that can spike your score on an Asperger's quiz. There's a lot of overlap with ADHD, several of the learning disabilities (because of the coping mechanisms many LD adults have developed over time), anxiety and mood disorders. Now, in a way this is academic, because a lot of the strategies for managing Asperger's (to make yourself more comfortable, not saying that people need to change!) are also useful in smoothing out the path if you have one of the other things instead.

That said, we've probably got a higher proportion of Aspies than a random sample would - by interacting online, we've already self-selected a specific social behaviour

chalk me up as diagnosed after my kid-by a psychiatrist using the DSM-IV.

I meet 12 of the 20 or so criterion, my son meets 17-they tested his dad, found nothing, tested me-bingo. No one ever suspected, but it did cancel out the 3 or 4 other diagnoses that I had been given, and explained why the meds didn't work-it wasn't what I had-grrr. Kind of upset at the amount of drugs I was given that I really didn't need-but oh well, Dr. said I've adapted well and unless I want it, I don't need treatment this late in life.

It was odd to find out that not everyone feels physical pain from loud noises, or being touched though. Even odder was the fact that the symptoms that led my son to be tested, are the same things I had at age 2 that my mom said made me a "fun and interesting kid", and I agree my son is a very interesting kid(he's six now).

As an aside when I decided to remove myself from the gene pool with a tubal ligation, the Dr that did the surgery had a collegue that was doing research on Autisum and genetics. So I signed a consent form so they could take my genetic material "from the source" so to speak, and attempt to find out why a child born to an Autistic parent has a 75% chance of being autistic. So yay my DNA is being studied, in depth, to possibly help others.

Slightly OT...they had an interesting thing on Autism on the radio this morning. I don't remember much of it, but they did say that when the person with Autism isn't looking at you when you are talking, they are actually listening, and trying to cut out the distractions around them so they can concentrate better.

Electronic shops in Yankeeland don't keep their expensive items behind glass cases so they couldn't *possibly* be filched without hammers and bolt butters?

EDIT: I got a 21 on the Wired test. Guess I don't have anything special with my mental brain - just my physical brain!!!

I got a 14 on the Wired test...most of the questions that I have trouble with were the social ones, but then I've always been a shy type.

and Tollbaby - I sometimes would rather type than copy/paste too. One thing I do at work is put book commentary on the web, and if we can't find it online at the publisher's website then we'll just copy it from the book jacket. Sometimes I'll type it up just cuz I feel like typing. It's almost a hypnotic thing sometimes. (but bad for my hands )

I tend to have this habit where if I make a mistype, instead of just erasing the letter that's wrong, or the word that's wrong, I erase an entire word/sentence and start again. Dunno why that is.

The way I figure, if I have it, I've always had it, and nothing changes just because I know what it's called, 'cause I'm still just as weird as always. And if I don't have it, then, well...I'm still just as weird as always, only I'm not spending any cash on psych bills for it.
And I wish more people had that attitude. "OK, you have <issue*>. How are YOU— not the government, not society, not mom & dad, and definitely not the poor teachers, store clerks, and other people who are supposed to help you— going to deal with it?"

                      * "Issue" may be something you consider a problem, and may not. People thought I was weird while I was growing up. They still do, somewhat. But I learned how to deal with most people, and how to get away with ignoring most of the rest. And I like what I've become.

People think the same thing about me, yes I'm weird and I have ADHD and I really don't care what others think. Some may think I have Asberger's. My point is, if I do big deal and I move on with my life. Who cares if I do things and think things that are considered unusual? I'm not afraid to be myself and I know it. I like who I am.
