Don't take pics of my kid!

I am not sure if this qualifies for this category since she ended up not being a customer after all.

My daughter was at a pageant this weekend and wore her seafoam green and pink dress I made her. She got best personality and queen by the way Even though 30 minutes before it was time to leave she decided to snatch my sewing scissors and go to her room with them and give herself a haircut I came in to tell her it was almost time to go and lets find everyones shoes and saw hair everywhere. I hurried up and fixed it into a pixie cut. That was all I could do but I miss her hair and was worried about it for the pageant. She said she did it because she wanted to look like Gage. My 2 year old son I just gave a buzz cut to.

Anyway, when beauty was over and while we were waiting on crowning I noticed some guy kept snapping pics in our direction. I was thinking to myself, what are they doing? Everytime I would move back a little or Nadine would lean up I would hear it snap. I looked over there at him and I think his wife realized I knew what they were doing. She was like, um, do you mind if we get a picture of her dress? Now I am not one of the psycho moms that is like NO DO NOT TAKE A PIC OF HER DRESS, YOU BETTER NOT COPY IT BLAHBLAHBLAH. She said she just wanted a pic of the color because she loved it, not the design or anything. I said sure and thanks for asking. He could not get a perfect picture of the color and I told her that I still had material in that color and that it had been discontinued so I bought it up so I could make her a dress like that if she wanted. She said no, she just wanted a pic because she already had someone that makes dresses for her. I was nice enough to tell her the fabric color and even gave her a piece of Nadine's matching hairbow since I can just do another hairbow in a minute with the material I have. The only reason I say she was sucky was because she was going to sneak and take pics of my kid without permission so she could copy the color of her dress. I don't even care about the fact she was going to copy it as much as that is my kid, don't take pics unless I say you can!

Wow, that's hard to come to a conclusion on here. I'm with you there that if anyone wants to take pictures of my kids (if that someone is someone I don't know), then I would expect to be asked first. Sounds to me though, maybe they were being innocent and had no idea what they were doing could be construed as wrong. Sounds like they meant no harm, but they still should have asked first.

In South Florida, they have nudist beaches and resorts, and I believe one of their strictest rules is if you take anyone's picture, especially of someone else's kid, get permission from both parties before doing it. I think the safest thing there is don't bring a camera at all!

It's good you jumped in there as who knows what pictures of our kids could be circulated on the internet.

I would also recommend being careful... if the woman didn't have the guts to ask you for permission first, it could still be someone unsafe... and saying "I want photos of the dress" could be a coverup.

Trust your instincts, ... but another idea may be to say, "Sure, but please give us 10 minutes to change." So that way she can have the photos of the dress - but without having photos of your daughter.

In the pageant world it is a big no no to take pics of the outfits especially with the intent to copy it. That is why in most bigger pageants they do not allow cameras in the changing rooms or ballrooms and you can get kicked out. I have seen actual fistfights over someone catching someone else taking a cellphone pic of their daughters dress. I am more laid back about it though, I could care less if a dozen other girls have the same exact dress, my daughters personality is what matters and if she gets on stage and loves the stage and does well it doesn't matter what anyone else is wearing. That is why I did not freak out especially after she even told me she wanted to copy the color and everything, I was more concerned about her husband sneaking and taking the pics.

I know why she didn't want to ask, read my reply above But even the pics did not show up the true color so I was very nice and gave her a piece of my daughters bow made from the same material so she could try and match it. I got home and made her a new one in about a minute so I wasn't worried about that. I just don't like anyone being sneaky like that.

Taking pictures with kids in it is a tricky thing. Speaking as a photographer you need to know how to do it right. Which is why I ALWAYS wear my staff photographer shirt when I work at faires and make sure to give the parents the card where they can find the shots,so I don't look like a werido taking kid pictures. If I'm elsewhere and taking pictures and see a kid doing cute things I make sure I do not get their full face in the shot, normally their back or side really so it's just a kid not a distinguishable picture of Sarah or who ever it is, make sense? lol I also try not to look like a creep doing it, there is no ninja Squeaks then. Then again Its really only at carnivals and parades I take kid shots outside of work, and if a parent wants me to delete the shot I make sure to show them the group of pictures to assure them I got rid of any shots of their kid.
The woman and her husband made a big mistake not asking your permission, I would have asked to see the photos and directed them to delete those and if they really wanted to get shots of the dress please take pictures without your child's face in it. You were pretty awesome for giving them a piece of fabric.
