I just went to an Aldi's for the first time a week ago. I'm in love with the concept- bring your own bags, corral your own carts, and no god damn ad tvs all over the place. And the cashiers get seats!

One of the things I used to do when I worked at the Grocery Store was chasing carts. I hated chasing carts especially in the dead of winter. Therefore, I will always make sure the cart is in the cart corral. My least favorite part of chasing carts was the people that would tilt the cart up a bit and leave it on one of the islands like they were parking a boat or something. Gah.
      This. Especially when it snowed.

I understand your point, but at least the cart wouldn't go flying around the parking lot whenever the wind chose to blow. Doesn't excuse SC laziness for never returning carts, but as a fellow customer, I like that it reduces the chance my car will get damaged.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

The coin thing isn't just to prevent damage to vehicles, we have a lot of folks stealing carts around here. It's neat and handy to take your groceries home instead of carrying them all, right? Of course, the carts are then abandoned all over the damn place, including miles away.
Indeed. I believe Aldi does it mostly to reduce costs. If they can "encourage" the customers to put their own carts back, they don't need to pay a cart-pusher. Just like if they don't provide free bags, they don't have to pay for the bags.

Our Walmart apparently deals with theft, as their carts have those wheel locks that trigger if taken outside the area of the store/parking lot.

I've really GOT to learn not to park my car in the parking lot at work--it's a big shopping center, I should park across the way, where no one EVER parks. I've got SO many orange-streaked dents and gouges in my car because we've got STEEL carts in a high-wind parking lot, and the lot guys never have enough time to actually collect carts. The latest one, in the rear passenger door, didn't just dent the car but put a nice long split in the paint.

You'd think I'd learn, but I'm perpetually thiiiiiiis close to being late and don't trust the drivers that fly through that shopping center and ignore the stop signs... *sigh*
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

The Goodwill may be doing that now because they're next to Aldi.
Wait, when did you move into our neighborhood . Honestly..we just had a Goodwill move next to our Aldi's (ok several months ago, but recent enough).

Ours were built next to each other about a year or so ago in a brand new plaza. But I wonder if that's similar to how my in-laws noticed that La Quinta frequently ends up next to Denny's (they joke that that's what La Quinta means in Spanish).

Yes, I hoped that would make someone else nostalgic for Pinky and ilk.

Why does this tick me off so?
because it's normal to be pissed off when people are so fucking lazy they can walk from their car to the store and then from the store to their car .... but just can't seem to move a few more feet to put their carts back.
