Was at the 99c store running an errand for my mom, total comes to $6.29 and I hand the cashier six dollars, one quarter and one dime (that's $6.35 total).

Cashier says, "So you've given me six dollars and thirty cents."

I say, "No, that's six thirty-FIVE."

Needless to say, when I get my change, she rang it as $6.30, and all I got was a penny back.

my friend got the opposite effect of noncounting.. She went to a frozen yogurt place the other day, her total was $14.22. She wanted a $5 back for a birthday card for her niece so she gave them a $20 bill and a quarter. The cashier was confused, spent a good two or three minutes just looking at the money in her hand, called the manager. Five minutes later, manager showed up, looked at the total, looked at the cash, again stared at it for about two minutes, and gave my friend $15.03 back. She just shrugged and walked off with it cuz she was tired of it by then.

So I just pretty much went, "Fine, keep the f(ing) five cents! " and stormed out.

Wow, that's some kind of special right there.

I sometimes get people treating me like I'm dumb because I give them partial change (in example, total is 5.83 and I give them 10.83 so, say, I get 50c/two quarters back instead of more than that) and they're stand there for a few minutes looking at the money I gave them, and then go, in example, it's six EIGHTY-THREE."

Me: I KNOW. :C (thinking: just ring up what I gave you and give me my change! It's not that difficult!)

Ok even if you allow for the fact that people can't count change back manually anymore like you USED to have to do, the register does it for you. Just put in the tendered amount and it will tell you what to give back, what's so hard about that?

I blame the schools -- we no longer teach math skills, but calculator skills.

Example: I had a hotel gift card for $100.00. My total was $103.40. The clerk needed a calculator to determine she needed to charge my other card $3.40.

WHO THE HELL NEEDS A CALCULATOR FOR 103-100=3

oh, that's right. I forgot where I was for a moment.

(Let's not talk about Taco Ding-dong, where the clerk needed the manager to help with the calculator for $20.04 - $6.04 = $14.00 -- yes, we waited for her to get the manager, then for the manager to find a calculator.)

She didn't need to give the cashier the quarter. If she had just given the $20, she would have gotten $5.78 back.

I fear I'm one of the last few that was taught how to count back money. I don't normally but I do know how. My parents taught me when I worked at the car shop we own.
Note: I'm 24.

I just love the dumbfounded looks I get when I give some odd amount so I get quarters....

my bf had the opposite problem one time at our local KFC. This was back when they used to have the weird debit system. It worked that if you used debit cards (they didn't take credit) you had to pick an amount that was larger (I believe in $5 or $10 increments can't remember) than your total and then you would get the difference. Example:

your total = $15.89
you choose to pull out $20 on your card
your change = $4.11

Weird system but simple enough i guess once the customer understands what they're doing.

Anyhoo, the Boy went one night for chickeny goodness and the total ended up being $17 something and he pulled out $20. The cashier then gave him $11 something in change. He tried to explain it, even gave her the "I know how it is to work a register and have a drawer be short. I don't want you to get in trouble" bit but she still insisted it was right. He then asked for a manager who said THE SAME THING! He just gave up and left with cheap chicken. He felt bad for the cashier though. That much off usually at least warrants a write up.

Thank god that they finally change over to normal debit/credit functions now!
