I read a post in here that reminded me of when I was looking to buy a digital camera. Now, I'm not Miss I-know-all-there-is-to-know-about-electronics, but I do a lot of research before I buy any electronic. I wanted to learn about all the features, all the lens types, the body types, battery types, etc. Once I had a laundry list of things I did and didn't want, I started resarching brands and models, looking at the reviews all the way. Finally, a (male) friend of mine took me to Best Buy while we were out and about so I could check out some cameras. They have they display models you can fiddle around with to see how the menu is set up and whatnot. I get to looking at a few camera's while my friend is hanging nearby.
This (male) employee nearby walked over and asked my friend if he had any questiona about the camera's. ......Really?! I'm standing here focused at this camera while he's texting, obviously not interested in cameras. I was a little ticked because this ALWAYS happens at Best Buy.
Guy Friend: No. I'm not buying anything. She's looking for a camera. I'm tagging along.
Sucky Employee: Oh.....*looks disappointed* Can I help you?
Me: No thanks. I'm mostly looking.
I keep looking and don't see any of the camera's I wanted to see on the display, so I asked SE if he could point out some decent, low priced cameras.
SE: Sure.... We have this (hot pink) camera that is cute and easy to use.
Me: Does it come in any other color?
SE: No.
Me: How many megapixels?
SE: .......8.
Me: I want at least 12.
SE: We have this one that has 12 mp and is easy to use. *points to bulky camera*
Me: I want an ultracompact camera with an integraded flash. I don't need the extra bulk.
SE: .........How bout this?
Me: *thumbs thru the settings* I'd like a camera with white balance settings.
SE: *looks surpised* Oh! I didn't think you knew what that even was!
Me: .....Yeah. I'm not totally clueless.
SE: Most girls don't get electronics.
Me: Just like you won't get a sale. Bye.
I was trying to not be a SC, but REALLY?!! Could you BE any more sexist?!! How about you ASK what the customer would like to get a feel of what they know.
Example: "I want a pretty camera that takes good pictures and can fit in my purse"!
Probly don't know much.
"I want a camera that *rambles off technical specs and features*".
Probly knows a lot.
It made me SO mad that he:
1) Went to my male friend first, despite the fact that he was clearly not looking at cameras and I was.
2) Talked to my male friend like a good buddy and talked to me like I was a stupid, pesky little kid.
3) Told me, to my face, that he didn't expect me to know anything because I have boobs, curves and a second "x" chromosome.
