  • You need to change your sign

So on Wednesday morning about 4:20ish I swung by my local McDonalds to get a coke and maybe some cookies because I was craving sweet stuff. There was a car that had just pulled in ahead of me, and the girl in the back seat was talking to the speaker. This is roughly how it went, I can't remember exact phrasing now.

McDonalds Lady: Hi, how can I help you?

Stupid Girl: I want a hamburger

ML: We're serving breakfast right now
SG: Your dinner menu is still up.
ML: We start serving breakfast at (whatever time they serve breakfast)
SG: Well you need to come out here and change your menu sign
ML: Ma'am we can't do that until (whatever time they let them come out and change the sign)
SG: Well you need to change it right now.
ML: Ma'am the company won't let me go outside to change it until (time) It's company policy.
SG: Change the sign now! (Starts calling the drive thru lady every name in the book, every profanity I've heard and some things I haven't)
ML: Ma'am you need to leave the drive thru now.
SG: (continues to ramble on about changing the menu)

About this time I am seriously considering yelling out through my window at her, because this has gone on for about four minutes and I'm wasting gas idling.

ML: Ma'am you need to leave my drive thru NOW.

The person driving the car finally took the hint and drove off. They drove around and glared at the lady through the window.

When I went to pay I mentioned the whole thing and she didn't seem overly upset. She said the girl looked extremely high and sounded that way too. I'm glad she took it well, because I was getting really pissed just watching it.

Funny thing... passing Burger King I saw the same car. This BK just started 24 hour drive through in May. I wondered if they were doing the same thing to them but didn't have time to follow to find out.

I hate stupid people. I figured by 4:20ish in the morning even the stupidest of them would be safely tucked away somewhere.

Aye, but as the order-taker said, Corporate does not ALLOW them to do so...which is a fail on Corporate's part. I have been to fast food joints where they have a "lunch/dinner" menu AND a breakfast menu up simultaneously, though. The girl in the car definitely went overboard with all of her invective.

A Mc Donald's person once told me they can't change the sign until (I forget what time) when more employees come in. At night, they work with the bare minimum and it is considered dangerous to send one of 4 employees outside in the dark to change the signs. They could send more people outside, but either way, they are putting the people in the store or the people outside at risk. Stupid Girl could assault someone

That is exactly what they say at my local McD's. I used to go through around 4am after my paper route. It was annoying, but them's the rules. When Hubs worked there, he filled me in on the same explanation Kisa posted. Hubs offered to change the sign on his way into his shift (he started at 4am or something like that), but they said he still couldn't do that.

I must admit, I am confused. I am pretty much used to my local McD's (here in Germany) serving their usual selection whenever they're open, plus the breakfeast during breakfeast time.

Whenever I go there during the morning, they will tell me 'Well, you'll have to wait for your <$Gringo Mc Baconburger>; we have none on standby during breakfeast time'... which I merrily oblige to.

Hmm... was this practice dicontinued in the US, or has it never been there?

Some of it may depend on the franchise. Here, they only serve breakfast at breakfast time. At some point in the night (I think around 3am?), they run breakfast, and start the switch over to lunch around 10:30am (you can still get breakfast items until about 11). So between whenever they start breakfast, to 10:30am, you can't get regular menu items.

I don't know if it was different, say, 40 or 50 years ago, but in the US, places like McD's or BK serve ONLY Breakfast OR "lunch" at any given time, save for a small period of crossover when 10:30am or so rolls around, when they may be trying to get rid of the last few hash browns or biscuits. Place like Whattaburger (I wish they were closer, but it IS worth an hour's drive to get one), that cook everything fresh to order will typically serve all of their items all day/all night long, whenever they're open.

I hit up Mickey D's lobby yesterday just after 11am, to get some favorite food for my mom. They still had up the breakfast menu. I politely asked if they were serving burgers yet, and they said yes. I am NOT a regular, so I don't know their menu. I asked if they had a lunch menu, and they went ahead and changed the menu boards over. I uneventfully placed my order, and moved aside to wait.

Why am I writing this? The couple (mid-40s-ish) that came in a few minutes behind me were all kinds of upset that the breakfast menu was no longer up! They ended up "talking" to the manager, and got their pancakes and eggs cooked up for them.

Oh well. Mom enjoyed her food!

I wonder if this is that same lady who is on You Tube, the one who wanted Chicken McNuggets at 3am? That lady was loaded big time.

That's one of the reasons I love Jack in the Box. Every menu item is available at any time.

I've never seen a McDonalds that changed their menu boards, though. But I'm really not a fan so very rarely go there.

Around here (Chicago area) nearly every McDonalds switches to breakfast at 3:30 am (just after the bars stop serving... if I wanted breakfast when I'm drunk I'd go to Denny's, but that's a rant for a different thread) and switch to dinner menu at 10:30 am. Certain locations can be "persuaded" to provide you with pancakes at any time of day, but none will serve dinner menu items during breakfast time. I'm not aware of any locations with DT menus that need to be manually changed, most locations have the breakfast combos and platters in a narrow section at the top of the menu board all the time, and the ones that don't have a quarter of the menu board that rotates by a motor with the dinner combo meals on one side and the breakfast ones on the other.

Burger Kings in this area, even the ones with a 24 hr drive thru, do breakfast from 5:30 to 10:30 and will serve their dinner menu on top of their breakfast menu during that time. The Whopper has a different combo meal number at breakfast time, getting demoted from number one to number thirteen.
