  • Bitter Much? The Cold Sholder Edition

Yesterday, I went out to dinner with my family at a private (members only) restauraunt because my grandpa is a member. I honestly didn't expect to get post worthy suckiness there because it was a quiet place on the golf course. I was mistaken

I ordered my food, couldn't get a potato with my burger but I didn't complain and gladly accepted fries. I am not a sucky customer About 5 minutes into the first course, I notice the waitress getting flirty with my dad. I roll my eyes and ignore her. While she was at the table, my dad looked to my mom and asked her, "Do you remember the first question I asked after you agreed to marry me"? Then, waitress thought, "he's TAKEN", and darkness rolled across her face. What was her evil plan? Fawn over daddy, ignore my mom

She comes over to ask who needs a refill: Daddy has a half full glass; Mom's is empty. Everyone gets a refill but mom. Daddy has to get her attention and ask for one for her.

The refill comes and there is a splenda packet in her Diet Coke. Mom calls for her (politely) and tries to request a new one. She ignores us until daddy calls her over.

Me: Wow mom, she really hates you, huh

My mom is a very sweet person, so she just laughed it off but it kinda pissed me off because I'm less nice

There's no excuse for that waitresses behavior other than her being a self-absorbed person who thinks the rules of polite society don't apply to her. You guys were nicer than many others would have been.

Please tell me you reported her to the manager, she was clearly flirting with your dad and intentionally ignoring your mom. Completely unprofessional, I'm surprised you were able to keep quiet because I most definitely would've said something.

I'm not sure if, had I been in this situation, I would've laughed, been annoyed, or reported her. Or some combination of the three. That's just bizarre.

She should have been reported. Fine, she was flirting with your dad for a bigger tip, no problem there. BUT -- she was ignoring other guests in order to do so - BIG problem there.

I like flirting, but if a waitress ignores my wife while flirting with me, she will get the tip her lack of service deserves - two pennies. (One could be excused as a mistake, but NO waitress will assume a two-penny tip means anything but "this is what you earned." And if she refuses to correct a mistake (splenda packet IN the soda?) then she DOES get reported. Especially in a members-only club, ALL guests are to be treated as if they are the paying member!

I got treated like that once when I was on the road with NatureScene, which was a show public television used to produce. It was almost funny, we were openly laughing about it by the end of the one and only meal we ate in that place. Crew consisted of four dudes and me.

Sadly, we were stuck in that little town all week, and would have eaten there a lot if it hadn't been staffed by a psycho. (the place was tiny). However, it was so far over the top there was no way it was an accident.

I really dont' know what moved her to act that way. If she wanted to flirt, flirt. It should have been pretty obvious we weren't paired off.

Now, had I been in your mom's shoes, you all would be reading about me in the paper. I'm not going to tolerate such blatant disrespect to me as to have some heifer hitting on my husband in my face. Oh HELL no.

If I'd been your mom, I would probably have started climbing into my husband's lap and making out high school style, but I'm a little passive aggressive like that....

PLEASE tell me someone reported her. I would not have tolerated such blatant disrespect to mothers face. The splenda packet IN her drink?! Heccckkk no.

I will 2d 3d and 4th the notion that this "waitress" should have beem reported.

silly question----- was it obvious that your Mon and Dad were a couple???? as in were they were sitting next to each other, talking and acting like a couple????? I assume they wear wedding rings????

I have to say it does not matter if you are at some dive or a high falluttin super exclusive country club, that type of behavior is totally unacceptable and what tip this server receives (or not receive) will relfect that bad behavior.

Yes I have attended functions at an exclusive country club and the staff was always great.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

Well i was thinking more along the lines of a joint bank account or ring.

Something similar happened to Mom & Dad once ... they were at the company clam bake - possibly after Dad had retired. Mom said some older woman was trying to talk Dad up, possibly trying to hook him up with her daughter.

Mom figured it was a gold-digger setup, after Dad's retirement money - one who didn't know about the unique retirement setup that Dad's employers had. Possibly because of earlier issues with employees retiring and then dumping the spouse for a younger model and leaving the original spouse with nothing..... the company retirement policy had been changed to joint ownership. Quite literally - the spouse owned half of the retirement policy.

Mom found a way to bring that up in the conversation, that she owned half of Dad's retirement policy... and soon afterwards the gold-digger mom & daughter found a reason to leave.

Poor waitress. Doesn't she realize that the best way to a good tip is to NEVER ignore the women at the table? Smile at the men, flirt first with the women and then go on and do your job. It's the best thing I ever learned from working behind a bar. Flirt mildly with everyone.

                              very good point.

I've been to two different restaurant chains that specialized in servers with large tracts of land. (or "breastaurants" as my boyfriend calls them. I've never had them treat me any less than they treated a male at the table.

i suspect they've learned what the server in the original post needs to learn... the woman at the table is as likely to be the one handling the money & tip... and pissing them off can never end well.
