  • Sucky Security.....

One of the accounts I go to is at a particular office complex. It's hardly the biggest in the world, but it's not small. 3 12-14 story interconnected buildings, with a central security department.

Now, obviously I understand the need for security in such a large complex, but the security guards there have their heads so far up their collective asses it's not even funny.

For example, I have no idea what the actual procedure is for being admitted to "visit" one of the tenant companies. This is because it depends entirely on which guard happens to be working the desk where I enter that day.

Some days, I tell them what company I work for and which company I am visiting, and they let me right up.

Some days, they have to call up to confirm that I'm expected (which I am not always, since I may be covering a last minute sick call).

And sometimes they put the entire onus on me to prove anything, and refuse to make phone calls or check the registered visitors list (which I'd be on if I am expected).

Honestly, I don't give a shit which one it is, I just want it done consistently with the entire staff, rather than having it be a gamble each time I go there.

Oh, I should also mention that we are a preferred vendor for [client company] and in theory we should not be harassed by security EVER.

Recently, I was there for a full week covering a vacation. The first 4 days I had no problems becaues I got the same guard every day. But Friday was pure hell.

Me: Hi, I work for [company] and I'm going up to [client company] today.

Sucky Guard: Could I see your company ID please?

Me: My company doesn't issue IDs [they don't. I've asked for one in the past].

SG: Well then I can't let you up unless you prove you work for [company].

Me: I'm expected; I'm on the list under [full name].

SG: But I still need to see your company ID.

Me: Like I said, I don't have one. My company doesn't issue one. Could oyu please call [contact at client company]? They can verify that I'm expected.

SG: But I still NEED a company ID to PROVE you work for [company], because anyone could say they do.

    Me:

Is this guy for real? He's refusing to check the expected visitor list WHICH MY NAME IS ON (and can be verified against my driver's license if necessary), and he's refusing to call upstairs?! AND he's still insisting on seeing a non-existant document.

Finally, as my last ditch effort before walking out (and going to a different entrance) I pulled out my health insurance card, which has my company logo on it.

I pointed DIRECTLY at the logo on the card, and he took it out of my hand, read the wrong logo, said "that tells me nothing" and handed it back to me disdainfully.

I pointed a little bit more forcefully at the logo, and finally, reluctantly, he read it, broke out of his stupid mode, and let me up.

    Jeeze!!

My contacts up there were really pissed off when I told them about this. They are just so sick and tired of the security dpeartment.

Thankfully, they're moving a couple towns over at the end of the quarter, so I won't have to put up with this much longer.

In a way I can identify with security, as I was a guard..and the rules could change at a whim, but we were always expected to follow whichever rule was currently in place..

However, there are ways of verifying a person without ID. Get a person from Management, get them to say it is ok..the security's behind is covered, and it is a lot faster and simpler.

Dave, try and see if some of these sites have a "contractor" badge. I have those with two of my sites and I have no issues with security (hell some of them know me by name and I don't even need a badge, except to get in).

But then, you're a logical person....

I've been working on that but it hasn't happened yet.

Want some advice from ex security? Find the lead security person of that place, or your contact for that place, and ask if THEY can make you something. Chances are they will, or find a way to get you through with less issue.

Edit : You already said you are working on that..never mind.
