  • Community theater suckage

The wife and I went to one of the local community theaters on Saturday night to see our friend/co-worker in "The Rocky Horror Show." The performance was excellent and the cast did an awesome job of keeping up with the occasional audience participation. There wasn't a lot, as most of this theater's regular crowds are older and really didn't know what to expect from Rocky. Other than losing the narrator to a medical emergency after the opening night performance (he was in attendance Sat. night, just not on stage) and having the director fill in for him for the rest of the run, the show went off pretty much smoothly.

Of course, not the Saturday night.... Just as intermission was beginning, one of the cast slipped and slid down the lobby stairs. It's only 5 steps or so, but he was a very large man and landed hard on his ankle. Thankfully, there were a pair of doctors in the audience (parents of one of the cast, in fact), and he was not badly injured. He did come back for the second act and performed as though nothing had happened.

None of this is sucky. Save that for the EW in the audience. Because of where the cast member had landed, the ushers held the doors to the lobby closed until things were under control. There were a number of questions as to why the doors weren't being opened, and after about 3 minutes or so, one of the backstage crew came on stage and explained the situation.

    Cue EW rant:

"What do you mean? I PAID to be here and you can't hold me here!"

Thankfully that's all she got out of her mouth before my wife shut her up.
"Lady, we ALL paid to be here. Shut up."

    I love my wife.

I was really hoping she wouldn't come back for the second act, but no such luck. She PAID to be there, and was damn well going to sit through the whole thing.....

Funny. I believe he was told the same thing. Repeatedly.

Sure, because it's all about you, isn't it? Never mind that a fellow human being is INJURED, we can't possibly inconvenience precious little you!

I was Brad in a troupe 25 years ago. I did the full Frank N Furter a few times even. Aaah, memories.

Don't know. I'd say he got off lucky. The Narrator's medical emergency landed him in the hospital for several days. (Kidney stones, and a botched removal procedure.)

I subbed as Eddie occasionally about 20 years ago, and my wife played Columbia (or occasionally Magenta or Janet) twice a week for 5 years.

I did a long, long stint as a shoutleader in my area.

Actually, it was a tape recording of RHPS that led me to figure out that the tape player in one of my cars was too fast. I couldn't get the shouts out in the space that was given, while I could on any other player.
