  • Captain?

Just recalled this funny tidbit from our vacation.

Mr. Dips and I took a cruise. Our captain was a woman. Which I mention only because it's meaningful to the story. She came on the PA many times introducing herself as Captain [female first name.] Her voice was obviously feminine. In addition her picture was on the wall near the purser's desk, she was around the ship meeting people and her picture and bio were on a flyer given to all passengers with information about the senior staff.

In other words her gender should no longer be a surprise to anyone 4 days into the cruise, right?

    Wrong.

On day 4 Mr. Dips went for a stroll on the helicopter pad on the bow to see if he could spot any wildlife up there. Another passenger was there as well, but started to leave before Mr. Dips did. Mr. Dips then turned to stroll back and the captain was coming up the stairs. He greeted her:

    Mr. Dips: Good morning, Captain.

    Captain: Good morning.

At this point the other passenger was behind the captain and overheard.

Other passenger: CAPTAIN? [Trust me. His tone was very much one of complete and utter disbelief that a female could hold that job.]

The captain turned around, looked right at him and said "Yes?" She was cordial but she was daring him to say something.

    Other passenger: Uummm, Good morning!

Captain [still with her eyes on locked on him]: Good morning.

Then she turned back and went on her way. Mr. Dips was trying not to laugh at the guy she had utterly owned.

The best karma is letting a jerk bash himself senseless on the wall of your polite indifference.

The stupid is strong with this one.

Oh please. Even Star Trek has had women Captains by now. One was the lady at the start of Star Trek 4 (the voyage home). The other was, of course, Katherine Janeway.

Yeah, but they still called them "Sir" for a while. (How strange was THAT?)

Before them was the captain of the Enterprise NCC-1701-C, Captain Rachel Garrett, featured in STNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise.

No stranger than "guys" (second person plural) evolving in our lifetime to include both men and women. And given the affront "Ma'am" seems to evoke, I can kinda see it happening.

Any service people about? What are superior females called? (Besides rank.)
